Septius VII Uprising

The Septius VII Uprising was a rebellion on the Imperial hive world Septius VII against its own ruling governor. No precise date for the rising has been established, though the episode is placed within the forty-first millennium; no segmentum location is recorded either. The governor of Septius VII and his ruling order were judged corrupt and unjust by those who rose against them, yet the governor remained the world’s rightful ruler, and the tithes owed to the Imperium had always been honoured in full. The uprising therefore set a population’s grievance against lawful, if venal, authority, rather than against any formal act of rebellion sanctioned from beyond the world itself. The course of the rising turned on the intervention of Cypher, a renegade of uncertain origin and allegiance who moves through Imperial history under false identities. On Septius VII he assumed the guise of an Inquisitor named Arnuldus, a disguise sufficiently convincing to grant him effective command over the planet’s defence. Using that authority, he misdirected the forces arrayed to put down the revolt, so that the defence intended to preserve Imperial rule instead collapsed. With the governor’s authority broken and his order unable to respond, the population of Septius VII won a brief period of freedom from Imperial oversight.
