Traitor General Gereon

Traitor General Gereon, also known as the Gereon mission, denotes the covert Imperial hunt for a collaborator general on occupied Gereon. The affair unfolded on the Imperial world of Gereon, in the Khan Group of the Sabbat Worlds, during the later years of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade in the early 770s of the 41st Millennium (M41). Gereon fell to the Archenemy in 771.M41, when forces under the Chaos Archon (a Chaos overlord’s title) Urlock Gaur swept through the Khan Group in an effort to sever the Crusade’s advancing spearhead, then driven forward under Warmaster Macaroth, from its exposed rear echelon. Despite resistance from the world’s Planetary Defence Force, Gereon was conquered and subjected to a punishing occupation its population came to call the Days of Pain, garrisoned by the Blood Pact and other Archenemy forces. By 774.M41 the world had become a training ground for the Sons of Sek, a warband raised by Anakwanar Sek, one of Gaur’s most powerful lieutenants, who administered Gereon through a subordinate governor. Among Sek’s assets on the world was Noches Sturm, a former Lord General Militant of the Volpone Bluebloods believed to have perished after displaying cowardice at the defence of Vervunhive: in fact he had been captured and kept alive, his memory of Crusade dispositions sealed behind a mental safeguard known as a mindlock, which Sek’s agents set about progressively breaking down to extract Imperial military intelligence. It was this officer, unnamed to Imperial high command at the time, whom Crusade intelligence services came to know only as the Traitor General. In response, a small covert team drawn from the Tanith First and Only under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt was inserted onto Gereon, cut off from resupply and extraction, with orders to locate and eliminate the Traitor General before his knowledge could be exploited further by the Archenemy. The operatives made contact with Gereon’s clandestine resistance network and, sustained by its aid at heavy cost, tracked their target to Lecticia Bastion, where the Traitor General was held; the mission there is recorded as ending in his assassination, though the operatives remained stranded behind enemy lines amid the occupied world’s continuing partisan war. The Gereon mission stands among the more prolonged irregular engagements of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade’s later years, exposing both the vulnerability of occupied Imperial worlds to sustained subjugation and the danger posed by senior officers turned to the Archenemy’s service. It forms part of the broader arc of Gereon’s occupation and eventual liberation, following directly from the world’s fall to Chaos and preceding the campaign that restored it to Imperial rule.
