Wolf King Yarant
Wolf King Yarant names the Horus Heresy episode in which Leman Russ, the Wolf King, and his wounded Space Wolves were besieged at Yarant by traitor forces. The title of Wolf King is borne by Russ in the Legion-era record and, in later usage, is applied to the Great Wolf of the Chapter, so the phrase alone does not fix the era; here it refers to the Heresy, in the millennium designated M31. The events at Yarant are more commonly recorded as the Wolf Cull, and the fuller account of the fighting is kept on the Battle of Yarant page. According to the recorded sequence, Russ was already wounded when his Legion was caught in the Yarant system, in Segmentum Solar, by a mixed traitor force led by Abaddon. The traitors held the orbitals and blockaded the system, so that the Space Wolves could neither withdraw freely nor be reinforced through the void. Principal accounts place the fighting on Yarant III, although some charts designate the same world Yarant II. The strength of the forces on each side, the composition of the traitor host beyond Abaddon’s command, and the course of the siege are not fully established, and accounts differ on the finer detail. The encirclement was broken when Corax’s Raven Guard forced a passage through the Yarant system, allowing the Space Wolves to leave. The episode left Russ’s Legion very nearly destroyed, and it remains one of the gravest events of the Space Wolves theatre in the Heresy. It should be distinguished from the earlier Crusade-era censure of the IXth Legion at the same world, and from the Stand at Yarant, which Orrery keeps as a separate entry.
