Kabal of the Black Heart

The Kabal of the Black Heart is the largest and most powerful Drukhari kabal, dominating the underworld city of Commorragh. A kabal is a piratical dynasty of the Drukhari, a warlike Aeldari kindred also called the Dark Eldar, and the Black Heart’s dominance makes it the effective ruling power of the Dark City. It is led by the Supreme Overlord Asdrubael Vect, who is recorded as the oldest known Drukhari and, by tradition, the founder of Commorragh itself, meaning the Black Heart may also be the first kabal ever founded, although the date of its founding is not firmly established.

Tradition holds that Vect built his early power through a clandestine body called the Cult of the Black Heart, embedded within the noble houses that once ruled Commorragh; through the assassination of rivals and a coup remembered as the Commorragh Raid, he broke the old aristocracy and refounded the organisation as a kabal, which in its early years also fought the city’s Sun Cults. The Black Heart today is less a single command than a sprawling confederation: numerous archons hold their own factions within it, vying for Vect’s patronage but wary of open murder, since none dare blunt one of the Supreme Overlord’s favoured tools. Vect is said to control key webway routes (the webway being the network of paths linking Commorragh to the wider galaxy) and to maintain a web of spies reaching into the craftworlds, Exodite worlds, Harlequin masques and Ynnari circles of the wider Aeldari species, backed by a close alliance with the Wych Cult of Strife, a fighting cult of arena gladiators that provides the kabal’s nearest equivalent to a genuine ally.

The kabal’s forces are recorded in actions including the Kyobin Raid of 883.M41, the Battle of Thersuis in 967.M41, and, around 999.M41, the War of Dark Revelations and the Raid on Bakka. At the Battle of Dûriel in 999.M41, Vect sent a fifth of the Black Heart fleet under Prime Archon Sarnak, together with half the Cult of Strife led by Lelith Hesperax, to support the craftworlds Biel-Tan and Iyanden against a Tyranid incursion. That same year, Vect personally led the defence of Khaine’s Gate against an incursion of Chaos daemons. Later raids attributed to the kabal include actions at Somniad, Lapradus and St Dornas Port, and, into the following millennium, the Dark Eldar Civil War, in which Vect and his allies sought to curb the growing influence of the Ynnari within Commorragh.

Beyond Vect, the kabal’s attested leadership includes Prime Archon Sarnak, who commands a significant portion of the Black Heart fleet, and a number of subordinate archons who each answer for their own factions. Its formal allies include the Kabal of the Poisoned Tongue and the Haemonculus coven, a guild of flesh-crafting torturers, known as the Prophets of Flesh, alongside the bond with the Cult of Strife. Black Heart warriors are traditionally arrayed in black and silver, their weapons finished in maroon. In the present era the kabal’s standing in Commorragh remains unrivalled among its rivals, sustained less by any single victory than by Vect’s continuing grip on the Dark City’s balance of power.
