Legio Mortis

Legio Mortis, known also as the Death’s Heads, is a Traitor Titan Legion of the Collegia Titanica that serves the Ruinous Powers of Chaos. A Titan Legion is an engine-house of the Collegia Titanica, the Adeptus Mechanicus institution that fields god-engines called Titans in war. The Legio Mortis is recorded as one of the Triad Ferrum Morgulus, the three original Titan Legions raised on Mars during the Age of Strife, before the founding of the Imperium, created to guard the Fabricator-General’s domain and to annihilate threats to the Cult Mechanicus.

The Legio’s origin lies with the forges of Mars, and it is recorded as bound by rite and personal loyalty to the office of the Fabricator-General rather than to the wider Imperium. This bond fostered a reputation for secrecy, hidden ritual, and contempt toward Titan Legions raised on other forge worlds, and set the Legio Mortis at odds with rivals such as the Legio Ignatum and the Legio Venator. Accounts describe the Legio’s princeps keeping meticulous tallies of the slain and adorning their engines with the remains of the defeated, a practice said to be the source of the Death’s Heads name.

During the Great Crusade the Legio Mortis was attached to the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet under the Primarch Horus, fighting alongside his forces in more than a hundred campaigns and, in the process, transferring its loyalty from the Emperor to the Warmaster himself. When Horus turned against the Imperium, the Legio followed him into the Horus Heresy and was corrupted by the Chaos god Nurgle. Its engines took part in the virus-bombing atrocity at Isstvan III, fought during the Schism of Mars in support of the traitor Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal, and clashed with the Legio Atarus at the Dropsite Massacre. During the Siege of Terra the Legio Mortis advanced on the Imperial Palace and there destroyed its long-standing rival, the Legio Ignatum, though by that stage its Titans are recorded as grossly mutated by the powers of Chaos.

Following the Heresy’s defeat, the surviving engines of the Legio Mortis withdrew beyond the reach of the Imperium, and accounts hold that they have since returned intermittently to assail Imperial worlds, including during the thirteenth Black Crusade of Abaddon the Despoiler. Many millennia after the Horus Heresy, the Legio Mortis remains counted among the most active Traitor Titan Legions, and its named engines and princeps are profiled individually elsewhere in this encyclopedia. Its homeworld is recorded as Mars, reflecting its Martian origin rather than any later holding.
