Sisters of Silence
Also known as Sisters of Silence
The Sisters of Silence are an order of psychic blanks raised within the Emperor’s household as the Imperium’s foremost anti‑psyker force. Nominally attached to the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, in truth they answer directly to the Emperor and, later, to the Lord Commander of the Imperium, and alongside the Adeptus Custodes they were counted among the Talons of the Emperor. Every sister is drawn from untouchable stock: a woman whose mind casts no shadow in the warp and who is accordingly immune to psychic assault, a trait that also disrupts psychic activity in those nearby. This nature sets the order apart from the Adepta Sororitas, with whom they share only an all-female membership and are otherwise unrelated.
The Silent Sisterhood took its name from a discipline of imposed muteness; among themselves the sisters communicate through Thoughtmark, a system that does not rely on sound. Their historic seat was the Somnus Citadel on Luna, maintained for them by the moon’s ancient Selenite custodians, and from it they organised the hunt, capture and transport of rogue psykers aboard the Black Ships that still carry the Imperium’s psychic tithe to Terra. Their standing as Untouchables allowed them, like the Custodes, to walk freely within the inner Imperial Palace.
The order traces its origins to the early Great Crusade, when the Astra Telepathica’s own psykers proved unable to safely contain those they captured, though some traditions hold the Sisterhood’s roots lie further back, in the Dark Age of Technology. During the Horus Heresy the sisters fought in the defence of the Imperial Palace and in the War in the Webway beneath Terra, and provided crucial support to the Space Wolves during the assault on Prospero, where their untouchable nature shielded the attackers from the Thousand Sons’ sorcery. Sister Commander Jenetia Krole was killed by Khârn of the World Eaters during the final defence of Terra.
In the Heresy’s aftermath a fearful and superstitious Imperium turned on the Sisterhood, and its strongholds, including the Somnus Citadel, fell into neglect or ruin. Scattered sisters continued their work alone or in small enclaves across the galaxy for thousands of years, remembered in this long twilight by figures such as Tanau Aleya, Amendera Kendel and Kaeria Casryn, even as many believed the order extinct. Their fortunes turned only with the resurrection of Roboute Guilliman, whose Dispensatus Anathema called the surviving sisters back to Terra; some three thousand answered the muster, reconstituting the order as the Vigil Indomitus and restoring the Somnus Citadel to active service during the Era Indomitus.
