Malan’tai

Malan’tai was an Aeldari craftworld destroyed in 812.M41 when a vampiric Zoanthrope drained its Infinity Circuit, leaving a drifting hulk. A Zoanthrope is a psychic Tyranid organism, and the loss is attributed to a single wounded bioship of Hive Fleet Naga. The Infinity Circuit is the network of wraithbone within a craftworld that holds the spirits of its dead and supports its psychic life, which made it a concentrated source of the energy the creature fed upon. Malan’tai is recorded as a craftworld lost to one Tyranid organism rather than to a direct assault.

Accounts place the origin of the disaster in the aftermath of an earlier engagement. After the first tendril of Hive Fleet Naga was destroyed, surviving mycetic spores, the Tyranid organisms that carry other creatures to a target, are said to have seeded the Zoanthrope on the craftworld. The defenders were then occupied in hunting more conspicuous Tyranid creatures, and the Zoanthrope was left unchallenged. It fed on the Infinity Circuit over an extended period, until a psychic scream in 812.M41 left the craftworld a drifting shell. The name Doom of Malan’tai refers both to the creature and to the account of its actions.

The hulk was not the end of the matter. Iyanden, the neighbouring craftworld most closely tied to the tale, later found Orks looting the abandoned wreck and steered its remains towards a sun, so that neither the xenos scavengers nor the ruined vessel remained. In this way the event links three of the setting’s threads: the Tyranid advance of the 41st Millennium, the vulnerability of Aeldari psychic infrastructure, and Iyanden’s own long struggle against the hive fleets, which culminated in the assault of Hive Fleet Kraken in 997.M41.

On the Orrery map, Malan’tai serves as an anchor for a destroyed craftworld rather than a surviving location. On the timeline, its fall in 812.M41 belongs to the period of early Tyranid incursions against the Aeldari. Sources differ on how many of its inhabitants were lost before the Zoanthrope’s final act, and on the precise position of the craftworld before it drifted.
