Valhalla

Valhalla is an ice-bound Imperial world in Imperium Nihilus, renowned as the source of the Astra Militarum’s Ice Warrior regiments. It holds no independent political weight of its own; its importance lies in its output of disciplined manpower and in its position within a sector of the Imperium isolated since the opening of the Great Rift.

Valhalla was not always a world of ice. It began as a temperate colony world until an iron comet struck its orbit, displacing the planet and freezing its oceans over. The survivors did not abandon their home but excavated hive-like cities down into the ice sheets, adapting their society entirely to the cold rather than fleeing it. During the subsequent War of Survival, the colonists fought off Ork invaders drawn to the disrupted world, a conflict remembered on Valhalla as the origin of the population’s enduring enmity towards the greenskin species.

That history of endurance shaped Valhalla’s principal contribution to the wider Imperium: its regiments of Ice Warriors, Astra Militarum infantry who treat sub-zero conditions as a tactical asset rather than a hardship familiar to troops raised elsewhere. Among these formations, the Valhallan 597th is recorded, in the commissarial memoirs attributed to Ciaphas Cain, as the regiment with which he served for much of his documented career, placing Valhalla among the handful of worlds whose local forces are tied to a named, recurring figure in Imperial military record.

Since the opening of the Great Rift, Valhalla has lain within Imperium Nihilus, cut off from direct governance by Terra along with the rest of that stricken region. It continues to raise and export regiments under local command, its ice-buried cities and hostility towards Ork incursion undimmed by the sector’s isolation, and its name remains bound in Imperial record to the wider network of Nihilus worlds now left to their own defence.
