Jurgen
Gunner, Aide to Commissar Ciaphas Cain
Also known as Gunner Jurgen
Homeworld: Valhalla
Jurgen is a Valhallan Ice Warriors guardsman, the long-serving aide of Commissar Ciaphas Cain, and a psychic blank whose presence dampens warp phenomena. Recorded in the Astra Militarum as a gunner, he is a native of the ice world Valhalla and is usually depicted carrying a meltagun, which he uses for the regiment’s heavy-weapon tasks as well as for Cain’s personal protection.
Jurgen entered Cain’s service early in the commissar’s recorded career and remained at his side across the campaigns that followed, among them the fighting on Gravalax and Perlia. Accounts describe him as literal-minded, loyal and largely indifferent to rank, and as notable for a persistent personal odour that companions found harder to bear than his blank nature. The two men’s relationship is the central working partnership of Cain’s memoirs: Jurgen shields Cain from psykers and warp-born enemies, while Cain uses his position to keep his aide alive and, in his own telling, out of formal scrutiny. Cain’s later associate, Inquisitor Amberley Vail, treats Jurgen’s condition as a matter of professional interest.
Jurgen’s standing rests on his role as the constant companion in the Cain narrative, which is set in the late 41st millennium and moves between many war zones without a single fixed map anchor. His tie to Valhalla places him among the Valhallan Ice Warriors, whose regiments served across the Imperium’s crusades of the period. His fate beyond the events of Cain’s memoirs is not clearly established, so his present status is recorded as unknown.
