Gunner Ferik Jurgen is Ciaphas Cain's aide, a Valhallan whose odour, manners, and talent for fetching a melta have been the Commissar's life-support system for decades. He is also a Blank. Daemons and witches notice that part first. Everyone else notices the rest and stands further away.
Cain keeps him close because a psychic null is worth a regiment and because Jurgen will drive any vehicle except a conversation. Perlia, Gravalax, and a dozen other fires ended with Jurgen in the doorway, looking like a hygiene offence and ruining some sorcerer's day. Amberley Vail noticed the gift early and never quite let go of it.
Valhalla produces ice-warriors. It also produced this one indispensable man. Cain's memoirs treat him as comic relief. The body count disagrees. Jurgen is still at his post, still unbothered, still the reason Cain is not a smear.
