Balhaut
The Battle of Balhaut was the closing engagement of Warmaster Slaydo’s Sabbat Worlds Crusade, fought on Balhaut in the forty-first millennium. The crusade, launched in the mid-750s.M41 to reclaim the Sabbat Worlds from the Archenemy, had advanced through the sector for roughly a quarter of a century, and Balhaut is recorded as the point at which the Chaos forces opposing it were brought to a decisive stand. The world stands on the Map as a Sabbat Worlds anchor, and the engagement is remembered chiefly as the culmination of the first great Imperial effort to recover the sector. The opposing sides were the Imperial Guard regiments and supporting forces under Warmaster Slaydo, and the Chaos host commanded by the Archenemy warlord Anakwanar Sek. Accounts describe a prolonged and costly contest in which Slaydo’s forces broke the strength of Sek’s army, and later tradition holds that Slaydo himself was killed in the fighting. Details of individual phases, unit dispositions and the manner of the leaders’ deaths differ between accounts, and this entry records only what is consistently attested. The battle sits within the same window as the wider Sabbat Worlds Crusade and its many contemporaneous campaigns, and it is best read alongside the timeline entry for Slaydo’s crusade as a whole. In its aftermath the crusade lost its Warmaster and the sector entered a long period of uneasy Imperial control, in which the Archenemy was checked but not eliminated. The loss of Slaydo left a lasting mark on the Astra Militarum’s memory of the campaign, and his death is often cited as the closing point of that first crusade. The Sabbat Worlds were later the subject of a further crusade under Warmaster Macaroth, whose campaigns are dated to the closing decades of the millennium, and Balhaut remains a reference point for the earlier effort.
