Slaydo

Slaydo was Warmaster of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, the Khulan veteran who opened Operation Redrake and died killing Archon Nadzybar on Balhaut.

A decorated veteran of the Khulan Border War, Slaydo held rank as Lord Militant of the 9th Division Pacificus before he petitioned the High Lords of Terra to sanction a crusade for the reconquest of Saint Sabbat’s worlds. He was raised to Warmaster in 755.M41 and opened the campaign as Operation Redrake, taking Formal Prime under his own personal command. Over the following decade the crusade’s front pushed on through Ashek II and Cociaminus, with Slaydo fixing its strategic aim on Newfound and, beyond it, the fortress-world of Balhaut, seat of Archon Nadzybar’s Occupation forces.

Slaydo’s staff during these years included his aide-de-camp Ibram Gaunt, whom he raised to colonel-commissar and trusted with matters of discipline and morale across the advancing armies. That patronage shaped Gaunt’s later career and standing within the crusade’s officer corps, marking him in the eyes of contemporaries and rivals alike as Slaydo’s man even after the Warmaster’s death. Slaydo’s own command style, forged in the Khulan campaigns, favoured direct personal leadership at the front rather than remote direction from a crusade fleet.

In 765.M41 Slaydo led the final assault on Nadzybar’s Oligarchy stronghold on Balhaut in person, sabre Liberatus in hand. He closed with the Archon in single combat, a duel recorded as lasting several minutes, and struck the killing blow after already receiving what proved a mortal wound. His death at the moment of victory passed command of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade to Macaroth, who inherited both the unfinished war and Liberatus itself, and left Balhaut as the campaign’s defining battle honour and the point at which the crusade’s second phase began.
