Heritor Asphodel

Heritor, Magister

Also known as Asphodel, The Heritor

Heritor Asphodel was a Chaos magister of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade era, prized by the warlord Nadzybar as a maker of engines of war. Among the technical adepts bound to Nadzybar’s cause, Asphodel stood apart as the architect of what are recorded as ‘woe machines’ — war engines built to break Imperial worlds from within rather than merely batter them from without. He is said to have preferred the title Heritor over Magister, a choice that reflected his understanding of his own work: each conquered world was not simply seized but inherited, reclaimed from the Imperium’s stewardship and returned to Chaos as if by rightful succession.

Asphodel’s rise is bound to the fortunes of Nadzybar, under whom he rose to become the warlord’s most capable engine-builder. His machines first proved themselves on Ashek II, where forces gathered under the Chaos champion Crow-Hand and the Hammerstone Kings drove Titan engines of Asphodel’s design onto the field, tearing the world apart in a campaign that became emblematic of his method: victory achieved through the deployment of purpose-built horrors rather than conventional siegecraft. Asphodel and his creations later featured in the wider Sabbat Worlds theatre at Balhaut, where his machines stalled the Silver Guard’s defence before Nadzybar’s cause collapsed on that world and Asphodel fled the defeat, his engines outlasting his master’s fortunes even as the wider offensive failed.

Asphodel’s final campaign came on Verghast, where he turned the world’s own industry against it, converting the vast foundry complex of Ferrozoica into an instrument of Chaos and directing the battle from a command land-cruiser at the heart of his mechanised forces. It was there that his career, and his life, ended: a scratch-company raid led by Ibram Gaunt struck at his command position in the wake of fighting that had already drawn in the possessed former Verghastite officer Gol Kolea, and Asphodel was killed at close quarters, cut down by an axe-rake in the chaos of the assault. His death on Verghast closed the Ashek II–Balhaut–Verghast arc that defines his place in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade: a maker of engines whose machines shaped three separate battles for Imperial worlds even as his own patron’s fortunes declined around him.
