Battle of Davin
The Battle of Davin was an early Horus Heresy campaign in which the Luna Wolves suppressed a rebellion on Davin, and Warmaster Horus was gravely wounded. Fought in the opening months of the Heresy, before Horus’s treachery against the Emperor had become open, the action centred on Davin and its moon and is remembered chiefly for its aftermath rather than its scale: the wounding of the Warmaster there is held by later tradition to be the moment his corruption by the Ruinous Powers became irreversible. Davin therefore occupies a small but pivotal place on the map of the Heresy, a garrison world whose name became attached to the turning point of the galaxy’s greatest civil war. The immediate cause was a rising among the Davinite population, a sect given to secretive fraternities resembling the Warrior Lodges then spreading through the Legiones Astartes, but bent toward the worship of a Chaos power under serpentine imagery. Rather than delegate the matter, Horus went in person, accompanied by a small retinue that included Garviel Loken, Tarik Torgaddon, Ezekyle Abaddon and Horus Aximand, to treat with the rebels at their temple on Davin’s moon. There he confronted the Davinite champion Xayver Jubal, a renegade former legionary, who carried a corrupted xenos blade known as the Anathame. In the duel that followed, Horus was stabbed by the dagger and fell into a wound that resisted all Legion medicae, leaving him hovering between life and death; accounts agree that the First Chaplain of the Word Bearers, Erebus, had engineered the encounter, though his hand went unproven at the time. Horus was carried back to the battle-barge Vengeful Spirit, where his convalescence was overseen in secret and, later tradition holds, shaped by agencies loyal to the Chaos Gods rather than the Emperor. He rose from that sickbed altered, and within a comparatively short span declared open rebellion against the Imperium, an act that inaugurated the Horus Heresy in earnest. The Battle of Davin is thus remembered less for its tactics than for its consequence: it links the world of Davin, in the timeline of the wider galaxy, to the single wound from which the Heresy is conventionally dated, and it binds the fates of Loken, Abaddon and Erebus to that moment as witnesses to, and in one case architect of, the Warmaster’s fall.
