Battle of Sparshad Mons
The Battle of Sparshad Mons was fought between Imperial forces and the Blood Pact for control of a fortified step-city on Ancreon Sextus. The struggle came after the wider Imperial campaign to reclaim the world had already driven Chaos forces out of its ordinary settlements, forcing the Blood Pact into a last redoubt among the rock compartments, archways, and terraced levels of Sparshad Mons itself. The engagement is recorded as one of the more attritional actions of the Ancreon Sextus campaign, notable less for manoeuvre than for the punishing logic of fighting an enemy that could not be dislodged by conventional means. The step-city’s architecture shaped the entire battle. Imperial commanders were reluctant to demolish its structures outright, since parts of Sparshad Mons were held to be potential shrines to the Emperor, and doctrine counselled against levelling ground that might carry such sanctity. The Blood Pact exploited this restraint, holding the labyrinthine interior while portals disguised as bare stone admitted a continuous flow of reinforcements and predatory creatures from off-world, sustaining the garrison well beyond what its visible strength suggested. Colonel Lucien Wilder of the Belladon 81st/1st Recon led sustained fighting through these labyrinths, one front among several kept open during the crusade’s push through the region. Elsewhere in the same campaign window, Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his regiment remained committed to clearing Gereon, a separate but concurrent Imperial effort that underscores how thinly the crusade’s forces were stretched across Ancreon Sextus and its neighbouring theatres at the time. The battle reached its end not through a breakthrough but through a change of method. Imperial command ultimately abandoned further fighting within the labyrinths and ordered an orbital bombardment of Sparshad Mons, accepting the loss of whatever the step-city’s stone had sheltered rather than continue the costly advance chamber by chamber. The withdrawal preceding the bombardment was incomplete, and accounts indicate that not every regiment committed to the labyrinths had cleared the structure before fire was called down. The battle is remembered within the Ancreon Sextus campaign as an illustration of the price exacted when defensible terrain, reinforced by hidden supply, is finally answered only by orbital force.
