Mkoll
Chief Scout, Sergeant
Also known as Oan Mkoll, Chief Scout Mkoll
Homeworld: Tanith
Oan Mkoll serves as chief scout of the Tanith First and Only, an Astra Militarum regiment raised from a homeworld destroyed before it mustered. He holds the informal rank of master of scouts beneath Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, and his responsibility is reconnaissance: reading unfamiliar ground and returning it to Gaunt as usable intelligence rather than guesswork.
Tanith was annihilated by Chaos forces on the same night its first regiment was raised for Imperial service, so the Tanith First and Only fights as the last living remnant of its world, without a homeworld to resupply or rotate back to. Mkoll’s scoutcraft descends from a civilian Tanith skill, woodsmanship learned among the world’s nalwood forests, which he alone among the regiment’s survivors converted into a disciplined military art. He is recorded as moving through hostile terrain as though it were still Tanith’s forest floor, and enemies along the Sabbat Worlds have been killed by Ghosts under his guidance without learning that their position had already been read.
Mkoll has led scout elements of the Ghosts, as the Tanith First and Only are known throughout the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, through actions on Monthax and the aerial theatre of Phantine, terrain that punished conventional soldiering and rewarded his methods. His most demanding operation took him to Gereon, a world under sustained Chaos occupation, where he served for an extended period separated from the regiment on covert reconnaissance alongside the fugitive group later known as the Lost; the mission cost the detachment heavily before Mkoll returned to active duty with the First and Only. Assignments of this kind, deep behind enemy lines for long stretches with minimal support, have worn down other specialists in the regiment, including its snipers, without visibly diminishing Mkoll’s own effectiveness.
Gaunt directs Mkoll to ground no one else has mapped, trusting him to convert absence of information into a workable picture rather than a report of what cannot be known. Major Rawne, whose confidence in fellow officers is otherwise scarce, extends Mkoll a trust rarely offered to others in the regiment, a dynamic the Ghosts’ own command structure treats as noteworthy. Mkoll’s closest peer-level friendship was with Colonel Colm Corbec, the regiment’s first colonel, and among the scouts he trained, Mkvenner rose to the closest approximation of a successor, a Tanith woodsman whose skill Mkoll himself regarded as equal to or exceeding his own.
Mkoll remains active with the Tanith First and Only into the later phases of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, his standing within the regiment built entirely on results rather than rhetoric; he is not remembered for addresses to the ranks but for bearings given and ground secured. The Ghosts’ reputation as woodsmen and infiltrators rests substantially on his record of returning from postings that, by rights, should have cost a patrol its lives, and later Tanith scouts are trained against the standard he set.
