Elim Rawne is Major of the Tanith First, the officer who started the regiment by plotting to knife Gaunt and then spent a crusade becoming the reason Gaunt still has a left flank. Verghast and the Gereon insertion sanded the traitor off him without sanding off the edge.

The Jantine and Inquisitor Heldane once took him apart for sport. Larkin and a revenge squad took him back. Rawne does not forget debts. He also does not pretend to like people. The Ghosts prefer that to a major who performs warmth.

Tanith's loss made him vicious. Command made him useful. He is still the man you put on the ugly job because he will not decorate it. Gaunt kept him. That is the whole character reference.
