Battle of Traitor’s Gorge
The Battle of Traitor’s Gorge was fought on Rynn’s World in 990.M41, during the Ork invasion led by Warlord Snagrod. The gorge, a defensible mountain pass on the Crimson Fists’ home world, takes its name from the role played there by the Fist of Fire, a company of the Chapter that had earlier fallen to Chaos and returned in secret to open a route for Snagrod’s Goff clan hordes. Rynn’s World had long served as the Crimson Fists’ fortress-monastery world and a bulwark of the Segmentum Obscura frontier, and the gorge’s loss threatened to unravel the planet’s wider defensive line at a critical stage of the siege. Accounts hold that a mixed force of Crimson Fists and Rynn’s World Planetary Defence Force troops moved to seal the pass once the traitors’ presence was discovered, fighting to deny Snagrod’s Orks the shortest approach to the Chapter’s fortress-monastery. The traitor Astartes fought alongside their former brothers only briefly before being overwhelmed, and the defenders then turned to hold the narrowing ground against the Ork advance itself, buying time for the wider Rynn’s World garrison to regroup under Chapter Master Pedro Kantor as losses elsewhere in the siege mounted. The fighting is remembered as one of the siege’s bitterest actions, fought as much against betrayal from within the Chapter as against the Ork host without. The gorge itself did not decide the siege, which continued until Imperial reinforcement and the death of Snagrod ended the invasion, but it is recorded as a turning point in exposing the Fist of Fire’s treachery and hardening the Crimson Fists’ resolve during their near-annihilation. In the present era the name Traitor’s Gorge endures on Rynn’s World as a marker of that betrayal, tied in Chapter memory to the broader Siege of Rynn’s World and to the rebuilding the Crimson Fists undertook in its aftermath.
