Damnos Incident

The Damnos Incident was a 41st Millennium conflict in which Ultramarines forces fought a newly awakened Necron tomb complex on the world of Damnos. It is recorded as one of the clearer modern instances of the Imperium confronting the Necrons in strength, and it is significant because it involved a Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes, Space Marines drawn from the Ultramarines, meeting an ancient xenos threat that had lain dormant beneath a world the Imperium had long regarded as of little strategic value. Damnos lies in the Ultima Segmentum and is associated with a Necron tomb complex buried beneath its surface. The incident is generally described as beginning when the dormant Necron presence stirred, its constructs and warriors emerging to reclaim the surface and to eliminate the mortal forces they found there. The precise year within the 41st Millennium is not asserted here, and accounts differ on the detail of the opening phase. The Imperial response is recorded as centring on the Ultramarines, who deployed against the awakened forces, with local Imperial defenders and supporting formations drawn into the fighting. Named commanders and the exact order of battle vary between accounts and are not given here beyond the Ultramarines role. The campaign is characteristic of Necron warfare in the wider setting: sudden emergence from tombs, resilient reanimating warriors, and technology that outclassed local Imperial defences. The Space Marines relied on concentrated assault, fire support and their capacity to strike at the tomb structures themselves rather than only at the forces emerging from them. The Damnos Incident therefore sits alongside other Imperial encounters with awakening tomb worlds, and it is often read as evidence that such sites can be confronted, though seldom without heavy cost. For the map and timeline, the incident binds Damnos to the Ultramarines and the Necrons in the same 41st Millennium window as the Chapter’s other campaigns in and around Ultramar. Its consequences are recorded chiefly as a heightened Imperial awareness of Necron tomb sites and the danger of leaving them undisturbed, rather than as a decisive change in the balance of any larger war. Readers should treat the outcome as it is presented on Orrery’s Damnos and Necron pages, since sources differ on whether the tomb was fully neutralised or merely returned to dormancy.
