Marneus Calgar

Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, Lord of Macragge, Lord Defender of Greater Ultramar

Also known as Lord Macragge, Tacitan

Homeworld: Nova Thulium

Marneus Augustus Calgar is Chapter Master of the Ultramarines and Lord of Macragge. He was born Tacitan, a serf of House Calgar on Nova Thulium in the Macragge system, in about the 41st millennium, and took the name of the house’s heir, Marneus, who was killed at the age of twelve when aspirants training on Thulium Minor proved to be Khorne cultists. An older account instead says he was found at about fourteen among captives of Hive Fleet Locust and rose through the armoury to Master of the Household before becoming Chapter Master; this conflicts with later publications, which treat Hive Fleet Behemoth as the Imperium’s first recorded Tyranid war and already have Calgar as Chapter Master during it. Both origins are recorded. Talassar is not his homeworld; it is the birth world of Cato Sicarius.

An older publication says that after a skirmish with Hive Fleet Perseus in 976.M41 he lost all four limbs, large areas of tissue, and his left eye, and was fitted with bionics; later publications do not repeat these limb losses, so the extent of the injury is not treated as settled. He is depicted with a bionic eye: the older text specifies the left eye, an image printed alongside that text shows the right, and later depictions use the left.

Calgar’s recorded career includes the Corinthian Crusade of 698.M41; the Battle for Macragge against Hive Fleet Behemoth, dated variously to 745.M41, to 746.M41, or to several decades after Tyran’s destruction in 745.M41; personal command of the Scouring of Quintarn in 759.M41; leading the Ultramarines to Thrax in 762.M41, where the outcome is disputed; holding the gate at Zalathras in 797.M41; banishing an Eldar Avatar on Commrath in 888.M41; being ambushed at Barathred in 921.M41; boarding the Indomitable in 935.M41, where he later admitted to imprisoning M’kar rather than destroying him; presence at the Second War for Armageddon, where he and Tu’Shan ceded command of the Space Marine strike force to Commander Dante; slaying the Swarmlord on Ichar IV, dated 993.M41 in the campaign account and 992.M41 in the world dossier; and banishing M’kar on Talassar in 854.999.M41.

Afterwards, at the rebirth of Guilliman, Calgar held back the Black Legion alongside Saint Celestine and the Grey Knight Voldus, and he remained Chapter Master through the Indomitus Crusade, becoming known as Lord Defender of Greater Ultramar rather than Master of Ultramar. He was the first Ultramarine to cross the Rubicon Primaris: the Chapter’s lords concluded that someone had to test the procedure, he stepped forward, and he clinically died during the surgery before being revived. During the Plague Wars, Guilliman recalled him to Ultramar, where he put down risings of the Ultramar Auxilia in the Illyrian region of Macragge and attended the conclave at the Fortress of Hera at which Guilliman restored the Tetrarchy and said that Calgar would preside over it; he is not recorded as taking the field against the Death Guard on Espandor, Parmenio, or Iax. He is separately recorded as having later slowed an Ork advance toward the forge world Metalica with rapid strikes, though no year or battlefield is named for this. On Vigilus, Guilliman, through a vision sent by Tigurius, ordered him to prevent the world’s fall; he commanded the War of Beasts and, in the War of Nightmares, duelled Abaddon at Saint’s Haven, where he was badly wounded, his primary heart cloven and his secondary heart salvaged, his voice left mechanical, and he thereafter commanded from the Vigilus Senate rather than the front line, after which the Adeptus Ministorum declared him a saint. In the 42nd millennium he fought the sorcerer Imurah on Demerium, and after withdrawing from the Bastior sub-sector he organised Operation Imperator for Armageddon without taking the field himself, with Lieutenant Eothrus of the 2nd Company acting as his proxy under the brevet rank of Honour Captain. He did not fight in the first Damnos campaign. He is still recorded as Chapter Master.

  • Battle for Orar’s Sepulchre (In 888.M41 led the whole Chapter to Commrath and banished the Avatar of Alaitoc at Orar’s Sepulchre. The battle was not fought on the world Orar.)
  • Bloodborn invasion (Commanded the defence of Ultramar and fought the Talassar battle in which M’kar was banished. He sent companies to Tarentus, Espandor, Calth, and Quintarn, and did not take the field on those worlds.)
  • Corinthian Crusade (Led the Imperial effort in 698.M41. He is not recorded as fighting in person on Slaughterhouse III, where the Lamenters fought.)
  • Deliverance of Thrax (Led the Ultramarines to the daemon-corrupted forge world in 762.M41. One account says the world was cleansed; another says he recovered data-records, withdrew, and pronounced Exterminatus.)
  • Detour to Barathred (In 921.M41, after a Night Lords ambush on the way to the Darkhold battlezone, made planetfall on Barathred, also spelled Barthred, and rallied the feudal population against the pursuers.)
  • Fall of M’kar (Fought on Talassar in 854.999.M41 and banished M’kar with the Shard of Erebus. A novel account places Agemman and the 1st Company with him; a codex places Sicarius and the 2nd. He did not fight in person on Tarentus, Espandor, Calth, or Quintarn during the invasion.)
  • Ichar IV Campaign (Led the defence against Hive Fleet Kraken and slew the Swarmlord. The campaign account dates the battle to 993.M41; the world dossier dates his return to 992.M41.)
  • Incursion of the Indomitable (Boarded the star fort in the outer orbit of Calth in 935.M41 with 1st Company Terminators. The Chapter record said he destroyed M’kar; he later admitted he had only imprisoned the daemon in the warp core.)

  • Second Battle of Damnos (Led the reconquest in 999.M41, turned a Necron pylon on the Baleful Necropolis, and freed a C’tan shard that Cato Sicarius then destroyed. He had not fought in the first Damnos campaign.)
  • Second War for Armageddon (Was present with the Ultramarines. With Tu’Shan, he ceded command of the Space Marine strike force to Commander Dante.)
  • Siege of Zalathras (Held a city gate alone for a night and a day in 797.M41, then the 2nd Company broke the siege. Honsou later dismissed that story as propaganda.)
  • The Battle of Macragge (Commanded the defence against Hive Fleet Behemoth. Accounts place him at Cold Steel Ridge, where the Swarmlord wounded him, and also with the fleet; one account keeps him in space for the whole battle. After evacuation to the battle barge Octavius he pursued the hive fleet to Circe. The battle is dated to 745.M41 and to 746.M41, and one account places it several decades after Tyran’s destruction in 745.M41. A list of his deeds also says he led the boarding of the hive ship Behemoth Primus.)
  • War of Beasts / Vigilus (Led the Space Marine reinforcements to Vigilus after a vision from Tigurius conveying Guilliman’s order that the world must not fall, and commanded the Imperial defence.)
