Eleventh Black Crusade
The Eleventh Black Crusade was a Chaos offensive of the forty-first millennium, launched from the Eye of Terror under Abaddon the Despoiler. It is one of the numbered Black Crusades, the sequence of major assaults by which Abaddon, Warmaster of Chaos and leader of the Black Legion, has sought to break out of the Eye and carry the war into the Imperium of Man. Its causes are those common to the sequence: the Despoiler’s long-standing ambition to destroy the Imperium, the pressure of the Ruinous Powers, and the opportunity offered when the Imperium’s defences on the Eye’s borders are stretched. The surviving record of this particular crusade is comparatively sparse, and its exact dating within the millennium is not fixed with the confidence given to the better-documented crusades. As with other Black Crusades, the course of the campaign is recorded as an outward push from the Eye of Terror, with Chaos Space Marine warbands, renegade Imperial forces, daemonic allies and cultist armies moving against the worlds around the Eye. The Cadian Gate, the stable route through the Eye’s surrounding warp storms and the principal barrier to such attacks, is the natural focus of any crusade of this kind, and the neighbouring Segmentum Obscurus and Segmentum Pacificus worlds bore the pressure of the fighting. Accounts differ on the scale of individual engagements, and no single decisive battle is attributed to this crusade with certainty. Abaddon is the principal named leader; the identities of his subordinate commanders and the specific warbands engaged are not reliably recorded. The crusade ended, like its predecessors, without the destruction of the Imperium or the fall of Terra, and Abaddon’s forces withdrew towards the Eye of Terror. Its consequences are best understood as part of a cumulative pattern: each Black Crusade drained Imperial garrisons, tested the defences of the Cadian sector and refined the Despoiler’s methods, in the long build-up to the later and better-known crusades of the closing years of the forty-first millennium.
