Ingethel the Ascended

Ingethel the Ascended is a Chaos-aligned figure associated with the Word Bearers. The epithet “the Ascended” follows a common Chaos usage in which a mortal champion or priest is elevated by the Ruinous Powers into a Daemon, and it is in that sense that Ingethel is placed among the Traitor Legions’ daemonic servants rather than among their living officers. The Word Bearers, the Legion founded on the doctrine of Lorgar, are the faction most closely tied to the name in Orrery’s records.

The surviving record of Ingethel’s individual career is sparse, and this page does not supply specific campaigns, dates or rivalries that the canon does not clearly attest. What can be stated is the pattern into which the name fits: the Word Bearers treat the summoning of daemons and the worship of the Chaos Powers as the centre of their religion, and their clergy, the Dark Apostles, are the principal channel through which mortals are drawn towards daemonhood. Accounts differ on the particulars of Ingethel’s rise, and no named master, disciple or sworn ally is recorded here with confidence. For the map and timeline, Ingethel is anchored to the Eye of Terror, the Warp rift adjacent to the Cadian Gate, and by extension to Cadia, the fortress world that held the principal passage out of the Eye until its destruction at the close of the Thirteenth Black Crusade in 999.M41. That binding is one of association with the region and the Word Bearers’ wider presence there, not a dated personal engagement, and it should not be read as evidence that Ingethel took part in the fall of Cadia. Among the contemporaries who frame the setting are the Word Bearers’ primarch Lorgar, whose teachings shaped the Legion’s theology, and Abaddon the Despoiler, whose Black Crusades drew many Chaos warbands, Word Bearers included, towards Cadia. Ingethel’s status is given as daemon, and no death is attested.
