Fall of Damnos

The Fall of Damnos, also called the Damnos Incident and the First Damnosian War, was fought between 973.M41 and 974.M41 on the ice mining world of Damnos in the Vidar Sector, when a Necron tomb complex of the Sautekh Dynasty awoke beneath its surface. Necron phalanxes purged the continent of Damnos Prime over several months, crossed the Tyrrean Ocean towards the capital, Kellenport, on Damnos Secundus, and destroyed the battleship Nobilis in orbit. Within six months the planetary defence forces were all but overwhelmed and Kellenport was under siege. The governor’s distress call reached the Ultramarines Strike Cruiser Valin’s Revenge, and Captain Cato Sicarius diverted it to Damnos with the 2nd Company; Chief Librarian Varro Tigurius, who had also received the call, accompanied the force. Sicarius divided his drop-pod assault three ways. He led the strike on the main Necron body outside the walls, where a Necron Lord felled him. Tigurius led the second group against the gauss siege cannons and Pylons firing on the city, destroying the Necron artillery and thousands of warriors in a single explosion. The third consisted of unmanned Deathwind pods. With Sicarius air-lifted to the Strike Cruiser, Tigurius assumed leadership of the company. Returning from the Thanatos foothills with word that more Necrons were awakening, Tigurius and the Venerable Dreadnought Agrippan judged that Damnos was lost and resolved to hold Kellenport until its people could be evacuated. Wherever the fighting was worst, Tigurius or Agrippan was present, and the defenders held while the last civilians left. As the final Thunderhawks lifted the surviving forty Space Marines and twenty Guardsmen from the spaceport, Agrippan’s reactor went critical and obliterated the spaceport and the Necrons within it. Damnos was left to the Necrons until the Ultramarines returned in 999.M41.
