Damnos

Damnos is an Imperial ice mining world in the Vidar Sector, the site of two Ultramarines campaigns against the Necrons. It is the principal world of the Damnos System, and its importance in the wider record rests less on its ice than on what lies beneath it: a Necron tomb complex whose reawakening drew the Ultramarines to the planet twice. Imperial histories therefore treat Damnos as the named Ultramarines–Necron theatre, and it is a common reference point when the two forces are set against each other.

The first campaign began when the Necrons awoke beneath the surface. Kellenport was destroyed by fire, and Captain Agrippan is recorded as having died covering the evacuation. Imperial histories call these events the Fall of Damnos. The campaign is also remembered for its effect on Cato Sicarius, who was broken by the experience. The Ultramarines withdrew, and the tomb complex remained in place beneath the ice.

Twenty-five years later Marneus Calgar returned to Damnos at the head of Ultramarines, Imperial Guard and Deathwatch forces and breached the Baleful Necropolis, the heart of the tomb complex. Sicarius, who had been present at the first fall, used a vortex grenade against a transcendent C’tan. Afterwards the tombs ceased to reactivate. On the timeline the two campaigns form a pair, with the Fall of Damnos as the loss and the return under Calgar as the answer to it. Between them they connect the Ultramarines leadership, the Necron dynasties and the Deathwatch in a single sequence of events.

On the map, Damnos sits in the Damnos System of the Vidar Sector, and unofficial summaries list it under that parent system. It should not be merged with Antax, the neighbouring forge world, which is a separate entry. The Imperial record gives Damnos as cleared of the reactivating tombs, but it does not describe a settled long-term recovery of the mining world. Accounts of what became of its surviving population and holdings are sparse, and this dossier does not supply details the record does not contain.
