Fall of Medusa V

The Fall of Medusa V was a multi-sided campaign of the late forty-first millennium for the Imperial mining world of Medusa V, ended when a warp storm consumed the planet. The Imperium of Man, the Necrons, Chaos Space Marines, Ork raiders, Eldar and the T’au Empire all committed forces to the world, in the Medusa System of the Ultima Segmentum, before it was lost. Accounts of the campaign’s date differ: an Imperial situation report dates the action to 857.M41, while the participation of the Chaos warlord Ygethmor the Deceiver in the Thirteenth Black Crusade of 999.M41 places the campaign at the close of the millennium. Medusa V lay close to the warp phenomenon called Van Grothe’s Rapidity, a turbulent passage nicknamed Hell’s Slingshot for the speed it lent to voyages through the immaterium. The Rapidity’s periodic flares had long isolated the Medusa System from Imperial contact, and roughly two hundred and fifty years earlier that same isolation had allowed the Medusa Schism to erupt on neighbouring Medusa IV, sending refugees fleeing to Medusa V. By the late 41st millennium the storm had begun to expand without precedent, consuming outposts along its edge, and Imperial augurs detected multiple arrivals converging on the threatened world. As the Rapidity closed on the system, Medusa V became the focus of a many-sided struggle. A Chaos Space Marine warlord named Ygethmor the Deceiver gathered warbands from several Traitor Legions in pursuit of daemonhood, while a Necron lord known to the Eldar as the Herald of the Storm woke an ancient tomb complex beneath the world. The Emperor’s Children on Medusa V were commanded by Lucius the Eternal, a Champion of Slaanesh. Lucius issued a challenge to the warriors of the Imperium to meet him in single combat. The Ultramarines Chaplain Aggripus, also spelled Aggripa, took up the challenge with the consent of his friend Captain Cato Sicarius, and was killed by Lucius in a duel at Hydra’s Tooth, a waste-processing complex at the mouth of the River Lethid. Lucius displayed the Chaplain’s remains upon a Chaos standard at Mithras Breach, from which Sicarius recovered them, after which the Ultramarines swore vengeance upon Lucius. Ork forces under the freebooter Nazdreg Ug Urdgrub crashed a space hulk into the planet’s surface in search of battle, and T’au and Eldar forces committed their own strength, each pursuing separate ends. The Imperium of Man mounted its defence with the Adeptus Arbites, planetary militia and Space Marine reinforcements, among them the Blood Angels, whose Chapter Master, Commander Dante, is recorded among those directing the Imperial response. Accounts of the campaign’s outcome differ. Some record that the Imperium lost Medusa V outright to the encroaching storm yet judged its war aims fulfilled, while others hold that Imperial forces achieved a full evacuation of the surviving civilian population before the world was finally engulfed. In either telling, Medusa V itself did not survive, and the episode stands alongside the earlier Medusa Schism as one of the two defining crises in the history of the Medusa System. The Inquisition’s wider call for aid reached Captain Cato Sicarius of the Ultramarines 2nd Company, and dozens of Space Marine Chapters, together with an Imperial Guard crusade under Lord Marshal Graf Harazahn of the Vostroyan Firstborn, came to the world’s defence. Sicarius’s first act was to deploy his forces across the planet in defensive formations and to release his vessels to hunt down any space traffic that might belong to the Orks, Eldar, Tyranids, T’au or Chaos. After a long and bloody campaign he issued an Exterminatus order for the dying planet, and he is remembered as the Hero of Medusa.
