Fulgrim’s ascension on Iydris

Fulgrim’s Ascension on Iydris, also known as the Battle of Iydris or the Angel Exterminatus campaign, was an engagement of the Horus Heresy, fought at approximately 007.M31 on Iydris, an artificial crone world of the Eldar located near a supermassive black hole at the centre of the Eye of Terror. A crone world is a former world of the Eldar empire that had been engulfed by the Eye of Terror. Following the Dropsite Massacre at Isstvan V, Fulgrim, primarch of the Emperor’s Children, joined Perturabo, primarch of the Iron Warriors, on the world of Hydra Cordatus, where he promised to lead Perturabo to a weapon known as the Angel Exterminatus, said to lie within the Eye of Terror. Before the two primarchs departed, Nykona Sharrowkyn of the Raven Guard, operating from the loyalist vessel Sisypheum, shot Fulgrim in the head; Fulgrim survived the wound through the efforts of Fabius. A brief boarding action against the Sisypheum followed the attack, after which the vessel escaped. Fulgrim and Perturabo subsequently landed on Iydris and entered an ancient Eldar citadel known as Amon ny’shak Kaelis, where the Emperor’s Children, the Iron Warriors, Titans of the Legio Mortis and traitor regiments of the Imperial Army fought thousands of Eldar wraith constructs. Among the commanders present were Eidolon, Julius Kaesoron, Lucius, Marius Vairosean and Fabius for the Emperor’s Children, and Forrix, Kroeger, Barban Falk and Toramino for the Iron Warriors. During the fighting on Iydris, Lucius was killed by Nykona Sharrowkyn and later awoke in the apothecarion, the medical chamber, of Fabius; Marius Vairosean was also killed in the battle. While the battle continued, Fulgrim slipped away from the fighting, and Perturabo pursued him to a vast spherical chamber within the citadel. There Fulgrim revealed that no weapon called the Angel Exterminatus existed, and that he himself was intended to become it. Using the Maugetar stone, an object earlier given to Perturabo as a gift, Fulgrim drained Perturabo’s power in an attempt to achieve apotheosis as a daemon prince. At this point, loyalist Salamanders, Iron Hands and Raven Guard of the Shattered Legions, under the command of the Iron Hands Captain Cadmus Tyro, who had pursued the traitor fleet since Isstvan V, launched an ambush; one of their number shattered the Maugetar stone, and Perturabo struck Fulgrim with his thunder hammer, destroying his mortal body. Fulgrim was reborn as a daemon prince of Slaanesh, taking a great serpentine form, and vanished together with his Legion. In the aftermath, the Iron Warriors purged the planet and Perturabo set course deeper into the Eye of Terror, while Fulgrim left his Legion to its own pursuits; the Emperor’s Children thereafter began to fracture into separate warbands.
