Mezoa
Mezoa is a volcanic Forge World of the Mechanicum in the Gothic Sector, remembered for the Mezoan Campaign of 008.M31, fought early in the Horus Heresy. The world was established from Lucius stock with the assistance of Ferrus Manus and the Emperor. Its cooled lava crust could not bear the weight of Titans, so it never hosted a Titan legion. Its cult follows the Path of the Flame Eternal, a set of practices regarded as unusual even by the standards of the Cult Mechanicus. Mezoa also kept ties with the Knight world of House Orhlacc, which is recorded as cultivating links with the Forge Worlds of Kalibrax, Lucius and Mezoa. The campaign began when Mezoa rejected the approach of Regulus, the envoy of Horus, whose overtures to the Forge Worlds formed part of the Warmaster’s effort to draw the Imperium’s industrial base into rebellion. Refusal exposed the world to attack by the Iron Warriors and the Alpha Legion, both then aligned with Horus. In 008.M31 Cassian Dracos led a hastily assembled loyalist force to its defence. The fighting took place on the volcanic crust of the forge world itself, and accounts do not record the size of either army or the sequence of engagements in detail. The loyalists defeated both the Iron Warriors and the Alpha Legion, and the forge survived. Its importance lies less in scale than in timing: it is one of the early, successful stands by a Forge World against the traitor legions, at a date when much of the Mechanicum’s allegiance was still contested. Mezoa’s later history is sparsely recorded, but the name recurs in the Warp Ghosts’ M41 record, where a raiding force is placed off Mezoa XV; whether that body relates to the forge world is not established. On Orrery the campaign links to Mezoa on the map, to the Gothic Sector neighbours of Lucius and Kalibrax, and to House Orhlacc, and it can be read alongside the wider opening phase of the Horus Heresy on the timeline.
