Shadow Crusade

The Shadow Crusade was a Horus Heresy campaign waged in 007–008.M31 by the Word Bearers and World Eaters Legions against Ultramar, the stellar domain of the Ultramarines Legion in the galaxy’s eastern fringe. Alongside the Battle of Calth, it formed the second theatre of the Traitors’ assault on the Five Hundred Worlds of Ultramar, led jointly by the Primarchs Lorgar Aurelian and Angron against their brother Roboute Guilliman. The campaign answered an old grievance: decades earlier, on the world of Khur, the Word Bearers had been made to kneel before the Emperor at Guilliman’s insistence, a humiliation Lorgar never forgave. With the bulk of the Ultramarines fleet already drawn into the ambush at Calth, Lorgar and his First Chaplain Erebus, together with the Dark Apostle Kor Phaeron, judged the moment right to strike at the wider Realm of Ultramar. Their deeper purpose was to feed the Ruinstorm, a warp storm summoned by Erebus at Calth that required further slaughter to reach its full, galaxy-dividing strength. The combined fleet, split into smaller raiding forces to strike many worlds at once, advanced with a ferocity that unsettled even the Word Bearers, as Angron repeatedly delayed the advance to butcher worlds of no strategic value, straining his alliance with Lorgar. The heaviest fighting came at the war world of Armatura, where the traitor fleet, spearheaded by two Furious Abyss-class battleships, broke through the Ultramarines’ defences. It was there that Lorgar first saw Angron’s rage beginning to overwhelm the Butcher’s Nails, the neural implants that bound the World Eaters’ fury, and resolved to seek the secret of taming it on Angron’s homeworld of Nuceria. While detachments ravaged other worlds, among them Talassar, the two Primarchs led a force to Nuceria, where they learned that the world’s slave-lords had slaughtered Angron’s former comrades-in-arms and claimed he had abandoned them. Angron ordered Nuceria purged in retribution, and it was there, as Guilliman’s scratch fleet arrived seeking vengeance for Calth, that the campaign reached its climax. Lorgar duelled Guilliman to a near-standstill before Angron intervened and overpowered his brother; as Guilliman was pulled to safety, Lorgar used Angron’s unleashed fury as the conduit for a ritual invoking Khorne, elevating him into a daemonic avatar of the Blood God that had shed the last restraint of the Butcher’s Nails. The carnage of the Shadow Crusade brought the Ruinstorm to its full strength, sealing off Ultramar and the surrounding Ultima Segmentum from Terra and isolating the Ultramarines along with the Dark Angels and Blood Angels, who mustered at Macragge in the arrangement that became Imperium Secundus. Lower-intensity fighting continued across Ultramar long after the Primarchs departed, in actions remembered as the World Eaters’ Butcher Fleets and the Word Bearers’ Argolian Massacres.
