Calth

Calth is a shipyard world in Ultramar whose blue sun, the Veridian star, has become poisonous and kills any life left on its surface. Its inhabitants live in cavern cities beneath the ash-choked ground, while shipbuilding for the Ultramar fleets continues in orbit above the ruined world.

The Word Bearers, using a false ork muster as a pretext, ambushed the XIII Legion at Calth early in the Horus Heresy, in the period following the Isstvan V dropsite massacre. The attack opened the Shadow Crusade, the Word Bearers’ campaign against Ultramar, and is recorded in Legion tradition as the Underworld War once the fighting was driven into the planet’s tunnels and cave systems. Roboute Guilliman, Aeonid Thiel and Remus Ventanus held the Veridian system against Kor Phaeron, Erebus and the Word Bearers host under Lorgar, while Angron’s World Eaters struck neighbouring theatres of Ultramar in the same offensive, stretching the primarch’s realm across several fronts at once.

The treachery at Calth left the Veridian star itself corrupted, its light turned poisonous, so that the surface has remained lethal ever since; the world’s cave-dwelling population and its orbital yards stand as the lasting, physical evidence of the betrayal. Calth is recorded as one of the principal loyalist reverses of the Horus Heresy, alongside Isstvan, and its ambush is frequently cited as the moment Guilliman’s trust in Word Bearers and, more broadly, in fellow Legions not openly declared for Horus, was permanently broken.

Unlike many Heresy-era battlefields left as ruins or memorials, Calth’s subterranean settlement and continued shipbuilding distinguish it as a world that endured its wound rather than being abandoned to it, remaining bound into Ultramar’s defence and industry in the millennia that followed.
