Siege of Vervunhive

The Siege of Vervunhive was a Sabbat Worlds Crusade battle in which the hive city of Vervunhive, on Verghast, withstood a Chaos assault from Ferrozoica. Over many weeks, Vervunhive was besieged by the forces of its neighbouring hive, whose entire population had been corrupted to the service of the Ruinous Powers under the Magister Heritor Asphodel. The engagement took place in the forty-first millennium, during the Crusade’s advance through the Sabbat Worlds, and is one of the best-recorded actions of the campaign on Verghast. The origins of the siege lay in an old rivalry. Some ninety standard years earlier, Vervunhive and Ferrozoica had fought a Trade War, after which relations between the two cities remained outwardly peaceful. Following Warmaster Slaydo’s victory at Balhaut, the fugitive Chaos Magister Heritor Asphodel escaped the defeat of Archon Nadzybar’s forces and infiltrated Ferrozoica, gradually corrupting its population, including women, the elderly and children. Vervunhive’s High Master, Salvador Sondar, treated months of silence and disturbing reports from the neighbouring hive as an internal matter, and the city was largely surprised when the assault began. The Zoican forces, numbering in the millions, opened with a sustained bombardment of Vervunhive’s southern wall that killed thousands of civilians before Sondar, suspicious of rivals within the city’s Legislature, authorised the raising of the hive’s Void Shield. An early armoured sortie led by Commissar Pius Kowle was driven back with heavy loss, and the fighting settled into a prolonged contest for the Veyveyr, Croe and Hieronymo Sondar Gates and for the Spoil, a refuse-heap approach to the walls. There the scratch-company fighters of Vervunhive, among them Agun Soric and Tona Criid, waged guerrilla actions against the besiegers. Reinforcements diverted from the wider Crusade reached the hive: the Tanith First-and-Only under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, the Royal Volpone under General Noches Sturm, and the Narmenian Armoured under General Coron Grizmund. They arrived as the neighbouring Vannick Hive was destroyed by Zoican atomic weapons, which showed that Ferrozoica sought the extermination of Vervunhive rather than a revival of the old trade rivalry. The siege turned when the Void Shield was again lowered to expose the city to bombardment, an act accounts attribute to Sondar’s corruption. A strike force led by Gaunt restored the shield and then broke into Asphodel’s mobile headquarters, where Gaunt killed the Heritor. The death of Asphodel shattered the cohesion of the Zoican assault and allowed the defenders to begin clearing the besiegers from the walls. Vervunhive survived at severe cost in lives and structure. Warmaster Macaroth, who commanded the Crusade after Slaydo, committed further Imperial Guard regiments, armour and Titan support to clear the remaining Zoican forces from Verghast. Many surviving scratch-company defenders were inducted into the Tanith First-and-Only in recognition of their service alongside the regiment. The siege ranks among the costlier actions of the Crusade on Verghast, and its aftermath led directly to the world’s liberation from Chaos influence.
