Verghast

Verghast is a hive-industrial world in the Sabbat Worlds, known for the siege of Vervunhive by Chaos forces during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Its population is concentrated in a small number of great hives, of which Vervunhive, Ferrozoica (often shortened to Zoica) and Vannick are the most often named. Before Chaos arrived, the planet’s history was one of industrial rivalry. A trade war between Vervunhive and Ferrozoica divided the world and left its hives politically and economically estranged, and that estrangement shaped how the later invasion unfolded.

The Chaos incursion was led by Heritor Asphodel, whose forces exploited the existing quarrel. Zoica was turned to the enemy’s cause, and Vannick was destroyed entirely. Vervunhive, the principal loyalist stronghold, was then besieged and came close to being overrun. The siege forms one of the earliest major campaigns of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade recorded on Orrery, and it places Verghast among the first Sabbat Worlds where the crusade’s Imperial Guard forces met Chaos on a hive world rather than in open space.

The relief of Vervunhive was carried out by an Imperial Guard force that included the Tanith First and Only under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, a regiment formed from the survivors of a world already lost. It reached the hive while the defence was failing, and Asphodel was killed among the hive’s ruins, ending the immediate threat. The siege therefore links two of the crusade’s recurring themes: the fall of Tanith, which produced the regiment, and the long campaign against Chaos across the Sabbat Worlds, in which Verghast was an early testing ground. Later tradition treats it as a formative campaign for Gaunt’s command.

The aftermath was slow and uneven. Vervunhive was widely regarded as lost, and its rebuilding proceeded only gradually, while the destruction of Vannick and the defection of Zoica left the planet’s hive network permanently reduced. On the Orrery map, Verghast is anchored as a hive world of the Sabbat Worlds and linked on the timeline to the siege of Vervunhive and to the wider crusade. The entry denotes the site of that siege and its consequences, and it should not be read as a general source of Imperial Guard recruits.
