Trial of Gabriel Seth

The Trial of Gabriel Seth was a hearing held on Baal late in M41, at which Chapter Masters of the Sanguinary Brotherhood judged the Master of the Flesh Tearers. The Sanguinary Brotherhood comprises the Blood Angels, whose homeworld is Baal, and their successor Chapters. The trial followed the Flesh Tearers’ deployment in the Third War for Armageddon, where their slaughter of the Gaius Point militia after an engagement with the Orks led the Order of the Argent Shroud to report the Chapter to the Ordo Hereticus with a recommendation that it be declared Excommunicate Traitoris. Summoned by Commander Dante, Seth stood before the court in the Forum Judicium, a chamber within the Blood Angels’ fortress-monastery, the Arx Angelicum, convened only in the gravest circumstances. Techial of the Disciples of Blood, appointed Chronicler, read the charges, which included the Flesh Tearers’ conduct in the Stromark Civil War of 991.M41 and Seth’s treatment of Inquisitor Corvin Herrold. Among those who spoke against Seth were Castellan Zargo of the Angels Encarmine, Geron of the Angels Numinous, Orloc of the Blood Drinkers, Malphas of the Exsanguinators and Lord Sentikan of the Angels Sanguine. When Seth condemned Mephiston as an abomination, Malakim Phoros of the Lamenters replied that the Chief Librarian did not kill with the abandon of the Flesh Tearers, whose sanctioned warriors, he said, made their Death Company seem sane by comparison. The Chapter Masters voted openly, each planting or casting down his blade. Most found Seth guilty, a handful stood in his defence, and Dante pronounced him unfit to hold his title and ordered the Flesh Tearers dispersed among the other Chapters. The sentence was set aside after the intervention of Astorath, High Chaplain of the Blood Angels, who argued that the Sanguinary Brotherhood needed the Flesh Tearers as its weapon; Seth remained guilty in the court’s judgement, but he and his Chapter were permitted to continue in the Emperor’s service.
