Gabriel Seth
Chapter Master of the Flesh Tearers, Guardian of Rage
Also known as Chapter Master Seth, Guardian of Rage
Homeworld: Cretacia
Gabriel Seth is Chapter Master of the Flesh Tearers, a Blood Angels successor Chapter, and its foremost defender against claims of the Chapter’s extinction. Raised on the harsh world of Cretacia, he rose to command a Chapter whose gene-seed carries the Blood Angels’ inherited flaws, the Black Rage and the Red Thirst, in an especially pronounced form. Where other successors treat this inheritance as a burden to be managed and, where possible, concealed, Seth has instead built the Flesh Tearers’ entire way of war around it, holding that a temperament other Chapters fear can be turned outward against the Imperium’s enemies rather than suppressed. This stance has made him unpopular among more cautious authorities within the Adeptus Terra, who regard the Flesh Tearers’ battlefield conduct as a liability bordering on the uncontrolled, but it has also kept his Chapter intact and fighting under its own name.
Seth has presided over the Chapter for more than a century. When he ascended to command in 815.M41, the Chapter’s Sanguinary High Priest judged that the Black Rage and battlefield attrition had finally overtaken Cretacia’s capacity to replace losses, and predicted extinction within decades. Seth answered with a vow that if the Flesh Tearers were to fade, they would be remembered with honour rather than fear. He deployed the Chapter on proactive patrols through known enemy territory, answered Imperial distress calls with unusual readiness, and kept his forces fighting in isolation from other Imperial armies so that their savagery would not fall upon allies. In battle he is recognisable by Blood Reaver, a two-handed chainblade; off the field he is recorded as stern and preoccupied with the doom that still hangs over his Chapter. Titles attached to him include Guardian of Rage.
In 837.M41 he fought on the shrine world Lucid Prime during the Eclipse Wars. After a Flesh Tearers counter-attack drove Chaos Space Marines from the hive of Ratspire, his warriors continued into the hive and killed its citizens. Seth assured the Space Wolves and Angels Vindicant that they were purging Chaos taint; the Space Wolves attacked the Flesh Tearers, and the fraternal bloodshed that followed was remembered as Honour’s End. In 998.M41 he was present on Armageddon during the Third War for Armageddon, accompanying an Imperial inquisitor on a mission that, in Blood in the Machine, placed him and his command squad at the Ephesus Ore Mine.
In the latter decades of M41 Dante summoned successor Chapter Masters to a Conclave on Baal after a Word Bearers plot nearly collapsed the Blood Angels into civil war. Dante asked for a tithe of recruits; Seth refused, arguing that the Flesh Tearers were already too reduced to spare men, and in private even suggested that the Blood Angels be disbanded so the Flesh Tearers might take Baal. When mutants unleashed by Fabius Bile attacked the crypt of Sanguinius, Seth fought beside Dante in its defence, afterwards addressed Dante as a true battle-brother, and pledged the men the Blood Angels needed — a reversal that also convinced the other Masters to pledge. Months later he passed information that helped the Blood Angels track a Bile clone who had stolen Sanguinius’s blood.
In 998.M41 he personally led a sizable Flesh Tearers force in the Cryptus Campaign against Hive Fleet Leviathan, fighting the final stand on Lysios while Dante’s Blood Angels and allied Necrons prepared the Magnovitrium strike that scoured the system. During the Devastation of Baal Dante entrusted him with the Reliquary of Amit before the Tyranids arrived. The Flesh Tearers deployed to Baal Primus beside the Knights of Blood; when the Great Rift opened and Ka’Bandha’s daemons manifested there, Seth evacuated his remaining forces while the Knights of Blood covered the withdrawal. After Dante was wounded by the Swarmlord, Seth led the retreat to the Blood Angels’ fortress-monastery and held out until the Indomitus Crusade arrived. He accepted Primaris reinforcement with open scepticism, fearing that Guilliman would turn the sons of Sanguinius into undifferentiated copies of Ultramarines in red armour.
In the Angel’s Halo campaign that followed, Seth struck at the industrial world Ashallon, one of the Points of Grace, and slew a large Tyranid psychic beast feeding on the husks of Astropaths in the city’s Astropathic Tower. On Dante’s orders he later oversaw a purge of the Corinth Belt alongside the Inquisition, slaughtering traitor ringleaders among its rebellious worlds. Within his own Chapter, Captain Guriel conspired with the Inquisition to eliminate him and trapped him in a shrine with an Eversor Assassin; Seth bested the assassin, used its embedded explosive to escape, and dealt with Guriel afterwards. He remains active as Chapter Master in the Era Indomitus, based from Cretacia, and his tenure still turns on a single argument made in word and in battle: that a Chapter shaped by violence can be turned toward the correct end, provided someone is willing to answer for it.
