Catachan Jungle Fighters
Also known as Catachans
The Catachan Jungle Fighters are Astra Militarum regiments raised from Catachan, a jungle Death World. Sometimes called “baby ogryns” for their unusually dense muscle and height, though rarely to their faces, Catachans are skilled at close-quarters killing with specialised fighting knives and at ambush with the lasgun, and are reckoned by other Guardsmen to be worth many times an ordinary trooper’s weight in jungle or hostile terrain. The exact date of the first regiments’ raising is not firmly established, but the arrangement between Catachan and the Departmento Munitorum is recorded as ancient: the world offers no food or resources beyond its people, and in exchange for off-world supply, Catachan tithes its warriors to the Imperial Guard.
Catachan itself is described as one of the deadliest worlds known to the Imperium, its flora and fauna almost universally lethal to human life; roughly half the population dies in infancy and half of the survivors before the age of ten, so that adults who reach maturity are natural survivors of exceptional toughness and resourcefulness. Regiments carry over the tribal structures of Catachan’s settlements, with troopers electing their own sergeants and captains, and squads often composed of blood relatives fighting side by side. Commissars attached to Catachan regiments are recorded as finding the posting difficult, since the Catachans respect ability earned in the field rather than formal rank, and both men and women serve as Guardsmen. Ogryns are frequently attached to Catachan formations, the two being regarded as natural companions in temperament and physical endurance, and the regiments’ elite troops, styled Catachan Devils, are drawn from warriors considered exceptional even by Catachan’s own standards.
Catachan regiments, numbering many distinct units raised over the centuries, are recorded serving predominantly in the Segmentum Solar and Segmentum Ultima, typically as light infantry specialising in scouting, ambush and guerrilla actions, though armoured formations have also been raised from the world. Named regiments such as the Catachan III “Green Devils”, the Catachan XXIV “Waiting Death”, and the Catachan XVIII “Swamprats” are associated with campaigns in dense terrain and hostile environments, including deployment to worlds such as Varestus Prime, where jungle and disease conditions closely mirror those of Catachan itself. Officers of these regiments are noted for fighting alongside their troops rather than directing from the rear, a practice that reinforces the trust-based discipline distinguishing Catachan formations from more rigidly hierarchical regiments of the Astra Militarum.
Among the Imperial Guard, the Catachan Jungle Fighters are held in a regard bordering on that reserved for the Adeptus Astartes, notable because Catachans achieve their feats without any genetic enhancement, relying instead on the brutal conditioning of their homeworld. The regiments have produced individually renowned soldiers, including Sly Marbo and Harker, whose exploits are treated as exceptional even among their own kind. As a source of manpower for the wider Imperium, Catachan’s tithe of jungle fighters is recorded as continuing without interruption, sustaining the world’s singular role within the Astra Militarum.
