Iron Hand Straken

Colonel of the Catachan II

Also known as Colonel Straken, Iron Hand

Homeworld: Catachan

Colonel ‘Iron Hand’ Straken is a Catachan Jungle Fighters officer of the Astra Militarum, marked by bionics from repeated combat wounds.

Straken rose through the Catachan II over decades of continuous deployment, the ordinary career path on a death world where survival itself is a qualification for rank. Catachan does not train officers in staff colleges; it produces them by attrition, promoting those who live long enough to accumulate scars and judgement in equal measure. Straken’s successive wounds, and the steel and augmetic limbs that replaced what he lost — an augmetic arm, an artificial eye, a jaw rebuilt in metal — are recorded as the origin of his epithet, a mark of endurance rather than any bond with the Iron Hands Space Marine Chapter, with which he shares only a name. Regimental accounts hold that each augmetic corresponds to a wound that would have ended a lesser soldier’s career, and that Straken returned to the line after each in turn.

His regiment has campaigned against Ork invasions, traitor incursions, and other enemies of the Imperium without abandoning the close-quarters, ambush-driven methods native to Catachan warfare. Straken is recorded as leading from the front rather than directing from the rear, a practice expected of Catachan commanders and one that accounts for the frequency of his injuries. In the field he is described as fighting alongside his men with blade and pistol rather than coordinating from a command post, and later accounts hold that grievous injury sharpens rather than blunts his effectiveness, driving him into a state of battle fury in which pain and caution are alike disregarded. Accounts of his service emphasise sustained, grinding engagements typical of Astra Militarum deployments rather than any single defining battle, consistent with a jungle-fighter career built on repetition and endurance.

Within the wider roster of named Catachan personnel, Straken is counted alongside figures such as the scout Sly Marbo and Sergeant Harker, death-world veterans whose service is chronicled in similar terms within Astra Militarum records, though no specific joint campaign between the three is attested. His command typically draws on Catachan specialists — heavy weapons teams, demolition experts, and the close-support squads sometimes called Catachan Devils — whose tactics he is said to direct with the same disregard for personal safety he shows in melee. He answers, as all Catachan officers do, to the regimental and Departmento Munitorum command structure above the Catachan II rather than to any personal warband, situating him firmly within the Imperial Guard’s conventional chain of command despite his outsized battlefield reputation.

Straken remains active, his augmetic body a standing record of a career spent on the line rather than behind it, with no account of retirement or death currently on record. As a fixture of the Catachan II in the present era, he stands alongside the regiment’s other named veterans as a benchmark of what death-world service demands and what it leaves behind.
