Sly Marbo

Catachan Devil

Also known as One-Man Army

Homeworld: Catachan

Sly Marbo is a Catachan Jungle Fighter of the Astra Militarum who operates alone rather than within a conventional platoon. The Munitorum, the administrative authority governing Imperial Guard forces, has been obliged to formally reclassify him rather than continue listing him as an ordinary reconnaissance asset. Catachan itself produces soldiers by attrition, a death world whose jungles kill the unwary long before an enemy does, and Marbo is held on his home world to exceed even that brutal baseline of survival.

His solitary role is recorded as originating in the destruction of his own platoon. Accounts agree that the unit was wiped out in a jungle ambush and that Marbo alone survived; they differ on the precise identity of the force responsible, though Ork raiders and heretic auxiliaries both feature in the telling. What is consistent is his response: rather than withdraw or fall back into a replacement platoon, he pursued the enemy force alone, over an extended and largely unwitnessed campaign, until it ceased to exist. The Munitorum’s later decision to carry him as an independent asset, rather than reassign him, is treated on Catachan as the formal acknowledgement of that campaign’s outcome.

Marbo’s subsequent service follows the same pattern. He appears in a war zone, most often ahead of or alongside a Catachan regiment’s own deployment, eliminates a threat disproportionate to a single soldier, and departs before the action can be fully logged. Guardsmen recount these episodes in the manner of hagiography, the retelling of a saint’s life, though the deeds concerned involve a demolition charge, a sniper’s rifle, and a knife rather than miracles. Colonel Iron Hand Straken, Catachan’s other widely known officer, represents the regiment’s public face of command; Marbo represents its refusal to be commanded in any conventional sense, and the two are rarely spoken of as operating together.

Whether Marbo remains alive is regarded on Catachan as a question scarcely worth asking, since nothing in the record marks his service as concluded and no muster has ever listed him as killed. He is not anchored to a single crusade or front; he is instead attached, campaign by campaign, wherever Catachan regiments are committed, which leaves his standing resting less on a fixed timeline than on the Munitorum’s reclassification of his role and on the durability of the stories Guardsmen tell about the man who fights beside them without ever quite being seen to do so.
