Black Reach

Black Reach is a hive world and the setting of the Assault on Black Reach, in which Ultramarines defeated the Orks of Warboss Zanzag. The location is also written Blackreach and lies within a system bearing its own name.

The Assault on Black Reach was issued as a boxed introductory set. In it, the 2nd Company of the Ultramarines, led by Cato Sicarius, carried out the landing, and the Chapter under Calgar was committed to the campaign. The world is characterised by Ork scrap-cities and hive spires, and its planetary title has been retained in later reprints of the material.

Black Reach holds a place in the game’s publishing history as the entry point to Warhammer 40,000 in its fifth edition. Unofficial summaries record the black-reach-system as its parent location, preserve the Blackreach alias, and treat it as distinct from Macragge, the capital of Ultramar.
