Catachan System

The Catachan System is a star system in Ultima Segmentum whose jungle death world, Catachan, is the standard by which other death worlds are compared. A death world is a planet whose environment is lethal to human settlers. Catachan’s environment is hostile to colonists, vehicles and, on occasion, Space Marines, and its principal export is the Jungle Fighter regiments of the Imperial Guard.

The charted system contains little besides Catachan itself and the void surrounding it. The Imperium does not develop the system as a settled territory; it draws on the planet’s surviving population for recruits. Catachan-born Guard personnel serve in warzones considerably harsher than those of most other worlds, which is the principal reason the system is recorded.

The Catachan System remains significant because the Imperial Guard continues to require soldiers accustomed to extreme environments, including those as hostile as a Tyranid-altered biome. Unofficial fan maps place the system under its parent, Ultima Segmentum, and do not add colony worlds to it.
