Cretacia

Cretacia is a cloud-covered jungle death world in the Corythos System, and the home world of the Flesh Tearers Space Marine Chapter. A death world is a planet whose environment is inimical to human life. Swamps and dense jungle characterise its surface, and the planet’s permanent cloud cover and hostile ecology give it a reputation as one of the harsher recruiting and training grounds available to a Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes.

The Flesh Tearers, a successor Chapter of the Blood Angels and so of Sanguinius’s gene-line, are recorded as having made Cretacia their home after millennia of crusading. Nassir Amit’s Chapter settled there because the world could satisfy the Chapter’s need to hunt. The swamps support reptiles comparable in size to scout Titans, together with insects capable of penetrating power armour, the protective armour worn by Space Marines. Feral human populations also inhabit the planet. These populations are hardy enough to be recruited, so the dangerous fauna and the resilient inhabitants make Cretacia both a suitable setting for the Chapter’s hunting and a source of potential recruits.

The planet’s importance lies in its relationship to the Chapter that holds it. The Flesh Tearers share the Blood Angels’ inherited flaws, the Red Thirst and the Black Rage, and are counted among the more volatile of the Blood Angels’ successors. Accounts present a world of constant combat as a fitting home for warriors of that temperament. No rival power is recorded as contesting Cretacia; it is treated as the Chapter’s own territory, and the Chapter’s wider history is told through its campaigns elsewhere, often alongside the Blood Angels and their other successors, including operations associated with Baal and the Chapter Master Gabriel Seth. Cretacia itself is a place of origin and return rather than a named battlefield.

On the Orrery map, Cretacia serves as the anchor for the Flesh Tearers, linking the Chapter to its parent Legion lineage in the Horus Heresy era and to its later crusades in the Imperium’s current age. Its present status is that of an active Chapter home world, though the extent of its fortifications and the details of the Chapter’s organisation there are not firmly established, and accounts differ.
