Imperium Nihilus
Imperium Nihilus is the portion of the Imperium of Man cut off from Terra’s Astronomican by the Great Rift, which opened at the end of M41. The name, from the Latin for “nothing”, describes the region that lies on the far side of the Cicatrix Maledictum from the Throneworld. Its worlds still claim Imperial allegiance and still answer, in principle, to the High Lords of Terra. In practice the Astronomican is dimmed or lost across most of this region, so navigation, astropathic communication and scheduled transit are severely disrupted. Imperium Nihilus is a realm-level grouping on the map rather than a formal sector government, and it describes the Imperium’s darkened half as a whole.
The division dates from the fall of Cadia and the culmination of the Thirteenth Black Crusade under Abaddon the Despoiler, when the Great Rift tore across the galaxy. This event opened the era known as the Dark Imperium. The Rift separated the Imperium into two unequal parts. Imperium Sanctus is the side that still lies within reach of Terra’s light. Imperium Nihilus is the far side, where worlds must rely on local defences, isolated fleets and the few beacons that still function. Accounts describe governors, Adeptus Ministorum cardinals, Astartes chapters and Imperial Navy squadrons acting on their own judgement, sometimes for years, because orders from Terra cannot reach them. Warp storms, daemonic incursions and the loss of the beacon network have also made trade and reinforcement irregular and hazardous.
Much of the narrative weight of the Dark Imperium falls on this side of the Rift, and the Indomitus Crusade launched by Roboute Guilliman was conceived in part to reconnect it. Guilliman’s fleets pushed into the darkened regions to relieve threatened worlds and bring word of the Primarch’s return. Campaigns in Nihilus territory, such as the struggle for the fortress world of Vigilus against Ork, Chaos and other invaders, show the typical pattern. Local Imperial forces are stretched thin, help arrives late, and the outcome often depends on coalitions of Astartes, Astra Militarum and Adeptus Mechanicus contingents that are not normally organised together. The Necron, Tyranid, Ork and Chaos threats all press on the region at once, and the Imperium’s ability to respond is far weaker than in its Terran heartland.
On the Orrery map, Imperium Nihilus is anchored to the Dark Imperium layer and to the post-Rift timeline, and it is best read together with the Great Rift, Cadia, Terra, the Astronomican and the Indomitus Crusade. Its present status is contested and unstable. Nominal Imperial authority persists in many places, and other places are recorded as lost, isolated or under attack, so any single description of its condition is necessarily a generalisation. Later writings may refine the boundaries between Nihilus and Sanctus, and the borders shown here should be treated as approximate.
