Octarius

Octarius, known also as Octaria or Octavius, is a mountainous mega-continent world that served as the capital of the Ork empire ruled by the Overfiend. Its single landmass of snow-covered peaks holds the sprawling shanty city of Gargates, and under the Overfiend’s rule the world stood at the centre of Waaagh! Octavius, an Ork empire that had grown large enough to rank among the greatest such realms yet recorded and, left unchecked, threatened to outgrow any single crusade sent against it.

It was this scale that drew the attention of Inquisitor Kryptman, who judged the Overfiend’s empire too dangerous to confront by conventional means and instead directed a splinter of Hive Fleet Leviathan into Octarius as a weapon turned against a rival threat. In the campaign that followed, the Swarmlord, the Hive Mind’s battlefield synapse creature, isolated the Overfiend from his greenskin hordes and killed him, and with its ruler gone the unity of the empire broke apart, precipitating the fall of Octarius itself.

The episode placed Kryptman and the Swarmlord among the world’s defining contemporaries, and it repeated, on a larger stage, the same calculated use of tyranid predation that Kryptman had earlier turned against Ork power elsewhere. Octarius is chiefly remembered for this deliberate collision of threats: an Imperial agent engineering a hive fleet’s course to destroy an Ork empire that Imperial arms alone might not have broken.

Ork and tyranid forces that remained on Octarius after the Overfiend’s death did not simply withdraw; accounts describe the fighting settling into a prolonged, self-sustaining war between the surviving greenskin remnants and the Leviathan splinter, each side adapting to the other over repeated engagements. Octarius thus stands in the present era less as a conquered world than as the site of an unresolved and continuing war, its final outcome not recorded.
