Octarius War
The Octarius War is a protracted, unresolved conflict between an Ork empire and Tyranid forces for control of Octarius, on the Nachmund Gauntlet. The Tyranid presence is drawn from Hive Fleet Leviathan, while the Ork side comprises numerous klans entrenched across Octarius and its neighbouring worlds over many generations. Unlike most Ork–Tyranid engagements, which typically end in the destruction or dispersal of one side, the fighting in the Octarius Sector has continued for years without a decisive victor, sustained by a self-perpetuating cycle in which each species’ pressure on the other accelerates its own evolution and expansion. The war’s opening is tied to the machinations of Inquisitor Kryptman, who sought a means of weakening Hive Fleet Leviathan as it advanced through the southern galaxy. Kryptman’s Deathwatch teams captured a live brood of Genestealers and seeded them aboard the space hulk Perdition’s Flame, then diverted the hulk into the Ork empire of Octarius. Ork Lootaz who boarded the hulk in search of plunder were infected instead, spreading the Genestealer strain across the sector; a tendril of Leviathan itself followed the resulting psychic signal into Ork space soon afterwards. Accounts differ on when this diversion took place, with some sources placing it around 989.M41 and others as late as 999.M41; the precise date is not firmly established, though the war is generally reckoned to have begun in the last decade of the 41st millennium. The invasion fell first upon Ork-held worlds such as Orrok, overrun within a single engagement, and Ghorala, stronghold of the Ork pirate Skarfang, where months of adaptive Tyranid tactics wore down the planet’s defenders before Skarfang himself was killed. On Octarius itself, the Overfiend of Octarius rallied his klans against the encroaching swarm, and the fighting later drew in the forces of Warboss Ghazghkull Thraka’s Waaagh! as well as Imperial powers, including Deathwatch kill teams and elements of the Astra Militarum. Ork clans on Octarius replenish their numbers with startling speed, their spore-based reproduction thriving on corpse-strewn battlefields, while the Tyranid organisms adapt continuously, evolving new bio-forms in direct response to Ork tactics and weaponry; neither side has proven capable of exterminating the other. Imperial intervention in the Octarius War is not aimed at ending the fighting outright but at preventing either side from breaking out of the system in strength, since a major Tyranid or Ork surge through the Nachmund Gauntlet could sever the passage and the supply lines that depend on it. The war predates the opening of the Great Rift but has gained fresh strategic weight amid the campaigns fought around the Rift and the Gauntlet in the years following the Noctis Aeterna, alongside operations such as the Arks of Omen. Related fighting has spread to neighbouring worlds of the Octarius Sector, including a separate Catachan campaign fought on Epsilon Octarius. Imperial strategists cite the Octarius War as a case study in mutual attrition: evidence that some conflicts within the war-torn galaxy cannot be won, only contained. Into the present era it remains active and unresolved, a closed, ecological war of extinction that continually renews itself, with the Ork empire and the Tyranid splinter locked in a stalemate that shows no sign of ending.
