Imperial Fists
Also known as VII Legion, Fists of Dorn
The Imperial Fists are a Space Marine Chapter descended from the VII Legion and Primarch Rogal Dorn, sworn to the defence of Terra.
Raised on Terra during the First Founding of the thirtieth millennium, the VII Legion recruited its aspirants from across the homeworld itself rather than from a single tithed region, a practice unique among the Legions. Rogal Dorn was recovered by the Emperor at the Ice Hives of Inwit, offering the ancient vessel Phalanx as a token of fealty; the Emperor restored the ship to him, and it became the Legion’s command vessel and, in time, its mobile fortress-monastery. The Imperial Fists have functioned as a fleet-based Chapter ever since, and although Terra remains their nominal homeworld and the seat of monuments such as the Pillar of Bone, no fixed planetary stronghold is attributed to them; Phalanx, one of the largest warships in Imperial service, serves in its place.
Under Dorn and First Captain Sigismund, the Legion distinguished itself during the Great Crusade as a master of siege warfare, mass assault and fortification, valued as a strategic reserve capable of breaking sieges or holding them indefinitely. This specialism set the Imperial Fists against the Iron Warriors and their primarch Perturabo in a rivalry that hardened into lasting enmity. When Horus turned against the Emperor, the Imperial Fists remained steadfastly loyal and bore the heaviest burden of the war’s final battles, organising and enduring the Siege of Terra, where fighting at the Eternity Gate marked the climactic defence of the Imperial Palace. In the Great Scouring that followed, the Chapter’s clash with the Iron Warriors in the action remembered as the Iron Cage became a defining episode of their continuing rivalry, with each side to this day recorded as claiming the victory.
Rogal Dorn was lost to the Imperium in the wars that followed the Heresy, but his Legion’s reorganisation under the Codex Astartes produced the Imperial Fists and, among their Second Founding successors, the Crimson Fists and the Black Templars, Chapters that between them carry forward his teachings of discipline and fortification. The Chapter’s heraldry of black and yellow, adopted after the Heresy in place of the Legion’s earlier grey and yellow, remains among the most recognised in the Imperium.
Ten thousand years on, the Imperial Fists continue in their self-appointed role as defenders of Terra and exemplars of the Codex Astartes, maintaining coded protocols for rapid redeployment to the Emperor’s side should Terra again come under threat. Commanders such as Tor Garadon have led its companies in the Chapter’s ongoing campaigns of the present era, sustaining a reputation for stubborn resilience and a stoic, taciturn temperament first noted among its Terran-born forebears.
