Halbrecht

Halbrecht was an Imperial Fists officer, styled Fleet Master, who commanded the Second Sphere of the Sol System’s defences at Uranus during the Solar War. He served the Legion of Primarch Rogal Dorn, which remained loyal to the Emperor of Mankind during the Horus Heresy, and he is named among the senior commanders charged with holding the approaches to Terra before the Siege of the Imperial Palace began. Some listings style him Captain, while accounts of the defensive scheme give the fleet-level title.

His place in the narrative derives from the layered defence that Dorn devised for the Sol System in the closing years of the Heresy. The system was divided into five Spheres, each combining Imperial Fists forces with Imperial Army and loyalist Mechanicum elements. First Captain Sigismund held the First Sphere at Pluto; Halbrecht held the Second at Uranus; Seneschal Efried commanded the Third around Jupiter; Siege Master Camba-Diaz oversaw the Fourth, the blockade of the Dark Mechanicum on Mars; and Dorn himself directed the Fifth, comprising Terra and Luna. Because Dorn chose to retain most of his Astartes for the defence of Terra, the outer Spheres relied heavily on Legion vessels crewed largely by unaugmented humans and on Imperial Army warships, which is the force Halbrecht is recorded as leading.

Uranus mattered because the Elysian Gate lay there, one of two Warp gates in the system that allowed an attacker to bypass the Mandeville Points, the other being the Khthonic Gate at Pluto. When the traitor armada arrived in 014.M31, the Iron Warriors under Perturabo assaulted the defences of Uranus while the Sons of Horus under Horus Aximand struck at Pluto, so that Halbrecht and Sigismund faced the two opening attacks in parallel. Accounts describe a wider battle in which the loyalists benefited from preparation and orbital fortifications, but the traitors held overwhelming numbers and had been supplied with a map of the loyalist dispositions by the Alpha Legion. The Solar War ended as a traitor victory in the sense that Horus’s forces reached Terra, and the Siege of Terra followed.
