Phalanx
The Phalanx is the moon-sized fortress-monastery of the Imperial Fists, a starship that predates the Imperium and serves as the VII Legion’s seat. It is frequently stationed in orbit of Terra, but it is a vessel capable of movement rather than a fixed installation, and its identity as a ship distinguishes it from a planetary chapter house or a permanent native of the Sol system. Its origins are not recorded in detail: it is described as an ancient construction of a period before the Emperor’s Great Crusade, and accounts of how it passed into the Legion’s hands are limited to its association with the Legion’s primarch.
Rogal Dorn is recorded as having offered the Phalanx to the Emperor, who instructed him to keep it as the seat of the VII Legion. The arrangement fixed the vessel’s dual character. It is a monastery, housing the Imperial Fists’ training, recruitment and ceremonial life, and it is a warship of a scale that few other vessels in Imperial service can match. That combination reflects the Legion’s wider reputation for fortification and siegecraft, and it explains why the Phalanx is treated as the Legion’s spiritual centre and not merely as a flagship.
The Phalanx is attested in the defence of Terra during the Solar War, when the Imperial Fists under Dorn held the Imperial Palace against the forces of Horus. In that period the vessel’s position in the Sol system ties it to the same contemporaries who defended the Palace: the Emperor, the Custodian Guard and the loyalist Legions, including the Blood Angels and the Sons of Horus’s opponents among the Adeptus Astartes. Later, the Phalanx is recorded as taking part in the fall of Cadia and in subsequent actions against the Tyranids, showing that its service extended well beyond the Heresy-era defence of the Throneworld. Details of individual engagements vary between accounts, and this dossier records only the general pattern of its deployments.
In the present era the Phalanx remains the central vessel of the Imperial Fists and their successor Chapters, and it continues to be associated with Terra even when it operates elsewhere. On the Orrery map its anchor is the void near the Sol system rather than a surface location, which is consistent with a mobile station. On the timeline it links the Great Crusade and Solar War entries for Rogal Dorn and the Imperial Fists with the later Cadian and Tyranid campaigns, and readers can follow those connections through the Imperial Fists, Rogal Dorn, Terra and Cadia dossiers.
