Maugan Ra
Phoenix Lord of the Dark Reapers
Also known as Harvester of Souls
Homeworld: Altansar
Maugan Ra, the Harvester of Souls, is the Phoenix Lord of the Dark Reapers and the last son of the Asuryani craftworld Altansar. As with the other Phoenix Lords, he stands apart from ordinary aspect warriors as both exemplar and progenitor of his shrine’s discipline, embodying the aspect of the reaper rather than merely teaching it. His signature weapon, the maugetar, is a reaper launcher of singular lethality that is never brought into close combat; Dark Reapers who follow his Path of the Harvest are trained to end an engagement at range, holding the killing shot rather than the blade as the mark of their calling.
Maugan Ra’s fate is bound to Altansar more closely than any other Phoenix Lord is bound to a single craftworld; he is remembered as its last son because he alone remained with it through a passage that other Asuryani regarded as a kind of self-exile. He led Altansar into the Eye of Terror, and there the craftworld and its lord passed out of the wider knowledge of the Asuryani for so long that Maugan Ra himself became little more than a rumour among the other craftworlds, a name invoked more often in warning than in counsel. When Altansar re-emerged from the Eye, he emerged with it, and the Dark Reapers of Altansar resumed a standing built on being feared at range rather than sought for company.
Among his fellow Phoenix Lords, Maugan Ra is accounted one of the more solitary figures, sharing with Asurmen, Jain Zar, Karandras, Baharroth and Fuegan the ancient bond of the Path of the Warrior even as he keeps his own counsel apart from their occasional councils. His dealings with the Ynnari, the following gathered around the god Ynnead, are recorded as inconsistent: Maugan Ra has fought alongside their armies in some campaigns and against them in others, a variance later tradition attributes less to conviction than to circumstance, since he has shown little interest in the political and theological questions that the cult of Ynnead raises for the Asuryani. This detachment marks him out even among a brotherhood already defined by isolation.
Maugan Ra remains active in the present era, based at Altansar following the craftworld’s return to the wider galaxy after its long passage through the Eye of Terror, an episode that anchors his story to one of the few fixed character-to-location bindings known for a Phoenix Lord. He is invoked wherever Altansar’s Dark Reapers muster, and his reappearance is treated by other craftworlds as confirmation that Altansar itself has returned rather than been lost. Within the Orrery’s map and timeline, he stands as the clearest link between Altansar as a place and the Eye of Terror as an event, with his intermittent alliances with the Ynnari providing the principal thread connecting him to that faction’s own contemporaries.
