Jain Zar

Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees

Also known as Storm of Silence, The Silent Storm

Jain Zar, called the Storm of Silence, is the Aeldari Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees and the first student of Asurmen. Like the other Phoenix Lords, she holds no fixed craftworld or homeworld, keeping instead to the wargear shrines and battle-hosts that summon her when a shrine’s need is greatest. Her founding insight, later spread across the Aspect shrines by Asurmen’s tradition, was that terror could be shaped and directed as precisely as a blade: the Howling Banshees she raised project a psychically amplified scream through their masks, a weapon that breaks an enemy’s nerve before a blow is struck.

Her rise follows the pattern set by Asurmen’s first cadre of students at the founding of Aspect warfare, in the era bridging the Aeldari civil wars and the Fall. Where her fellow Phoenix Lords refined aggression, endurance, or ambush, Jain Zar refined the exploitation of fear itself, a doctrine the Howling Banshees still train to and one credited with shaping how younger shrines approach close combat across many craftworlds.

Her clearest recorded appearance in later ages comes from the schism at Biel-Tan, where she sided with Yvraine against the craftworld’s ossified conservatism, lending the Howling Banshees’ weight to the rise of the Ynnari. During this period she is recorded as having fought and fallen in single combat against Drazhar, master of the Incubi of Commorragh, a duel accounts treat as a genuine defeat rather than a stratagem. As with other Phoenix Lords whose armour is broken in battle, her wargear passed in due course to another senior Exarch of the Howling Banshees, and Jain Zar’s presence continued through it.

She later drew back from Yvraine and the Ynnari movement, a withdrawal accounts link to the mounting toll Yvraine’s wars exacted on the Aspect shrines she considered hers to protect, placing her at a careful distance from a cause she had once supported. The Howling Banshees continue to answer her mask in battle, and the sound bound to her name is held to be one of the few things that unsettles Slaanesh, giving her opposition to the Prince of Pleasure a rare, if narrow, edge among the Aeldari’s scattered fortunes.
