Phoenix Lord of the Dire Avengers, Hand of Asuryan
Also known as Hand of Asuryan, The Phoenix Lord
Homeworld: Asur
Asurmen, known as the Hand of Asuryan, is the first and eldest of the Aeldari Phoenix Lords and founder of the Path of the Warrior. In the age before the Fall he was already accounted a duellist without peer among the old Aeldari, and when the psychic cataclysm of Slaanesh’s birth consumed his kindred’s civilisation, he was the first to master the war-masks and daemon-forged battle plate that would define the Phoenix Lords. From that survival he drew the discipline later Asuryani call the Path of the Warrior: a bounded, ritual practice of war that allows a soul to fight without surrendering itself entirely to the Great Enemy. The Dire Avengers, the warrior shrine that carries his name and technique forward, remain the school through which the majority of craftworld Aeldari first learn to bear arms.
Asurmen is recorded as having taught the disciplines that in turn shaped several of the other Phoenix Lords, including Jain Zar and Karandras, though accounts differ on how much of their separate arts he originated and how much he merely guided into being. This places him at the root of the wider Phoenix Lord tradition rather than as a peer among equals; the Asuryani frequently describe him as first among that fellowship, the master whose sword-craft became the common ancestor of many warrior shrines. His relationship with the Autarchs and farseers of the craftworlds is one of distant respect rather than close alliance, since a Phoenix Lord answers to no single craftworld and appears where the war-mask itself judges the need greatest.
Asurmen’s continuity does not depend on a single body. When the wearer of his armour falls, an Exarch of the Dire Avengers, a shrine-master already bound to a fraction of the Phoenix Lord’s spirit, may take up the war-mask and armour, and Asurmen fights on. This mechanism, shared by all Phoenix Lords but most closely associated with Asurmen as its originator, is the reason the Asuryani regard his appearances as the return of one enduring figure rather than a succession of separate champions. Biel-Tan and roughly a dozen other craftworlds have recorded his arrival at moments when no reinforcement could reasonably have been expected, and his presence at such battles is treated less as coincidence than as confirmation that the Path of the Warrior he founded still holds.
Ten thousand years after the Fall, the Asuryani have found no successor discipline to replace the one Asurmen laid down, and his standing rests on that unbroken teaching as much as on the deeds attributed to him directly. He remains active in the present era, invoked wherever a Dire Avengers shrine trains new warriors and reappearing, as tradition holds, whenever a craftworld’s need is dire enough to summon the Hand of Asuryan himself.
