Nork Deddog
Ogryn Bodyguard
Also known as Deddog
Homeworld: Catachan
Nork Deddog is an Ogryn bodyguard of the Astra Militarum, valued for an intelligence unusual among Ogryns and long service to Commissar Ciaphas Cain. Where most Ogryns require simplified orders and close supervision, Nork comprehends instructions in something close to normal speech, remembers individual faces across years of separation, and can be trusted to act without a minder standing over him. This trait, rare enough to be remarked upon by every officer who has worked with him, is the reason he has been kept close to command staff rather than assigned to a standard Ogryn squad.
Born on Catachan, Nork followed the path common to the world’s more formidable sons into Guard service as muscle attached to a Catachan-raised formation. Accounts place him at Cain’s side across a run of campaigns spanning much of the commissar’s later career, including the defence of Perlia against Chaos and Tyranid incursion, the stand-off with the tau at Gravalax, the genestealer cult uprising on Simia Orichalcae, and the fighting against Chaos raiders on Adumbria. Through these actions Nork’s role stayed constant: keep the officer alive, regardless of what stood in the way.
Nork treats his duty as a simple bargain rather than a matter of doctrine or theology. Cain gives direction; Nork provides muscle; the arrangement is judged sound by however many battles both have survived it. He has pulled more commanders from danger than the Munitorum’s ledgers formally credit to an abhuman, and he keeps medals mainly as evidence the arrangement continues to work, showing little interest in the recognition itself. His bond with Cain is the clearest attested relationship in his record — closer to comradeship than the master-and-bodyguard footing more typical of Ogryn attachments.
The Munitorum classifies him administratively as a resource assigned to whichever command he currently protects, a designation that says nothing of the trust placed in him by the officers and soldiers who owe their survival to his presence. He remains in active service, his standing built less on rank, which he holds none of in any formal sense, than on a reputation for reliability that has followed him from one command posting to the next.
