Old One Eye

Carnifex

Also known as The Catachan Devil Carnifex

Old One Eye is a Tyranid Carnifex, recorded as destroyed on Catachan yet sighted alive afterwards on other worlds, identified by a scarred eye socket. A Carnifex is a heavy assault bioform of the hive fleets, grown for close-quarters demolition of fortified positions and armour, and Old One Eye is distinguished from its kin only by this old wound and by a pattern of survival that Imperial record-keepers have never satisfactorily explained.

The creature entered Munitorum record during a Tyranid descent on Catachan, where the jungle-fighting regiments known as the Catachan Devils fought it to a standstill in the dense undergrowth the world is named for. Guardsmen reported the Carnifex destroyed and its carcass lost to the jungle canopy that swallows most battlefield dead on Catachan. Years afterwards a Carnifex bearing an identical scar over one eye was reported active far beyond that world, among the bioforms encountered during a Tyranid incursion at Tarsis Ultra. Imperial analysts treat the eye wound as the one reliable means of tying these separate sightings to a single creature, since hive fleet bioforms are otherwise grown to a common template and are not individually distinguishable in the field.

The recurrence is difficult to reconcile with what is understood of Tyranid biology. Bioforms act as extensions of the Hive Mind, directed through synapse creatures, and are not expected to persist as recognisable individuals across campaigns separated by years and by different hive fleet incursions. Whether Old One Eye represents a single organism regenerated by Tyranid biological processes, a recurring pattern the Hive Mind has chosen to reproduce, or a coincidence of similar wounds on unrelated Carnifexes, accounts differ, and the Munitorum has filed its death under more than one campaign without those filings ever aligning with a confirmed kill. It remains listed as active on the strength of its most recent sighting, a standing anomaly in an otherwise faceless swarm.
